Lack of diversity in the industry. Many people in the industry are connected and come from a similar economic/political/educational background. Or lack of education as it turns out from the accounts of people who've attended art schools. Most notably the Arts Institute of California. The industry people in question are vain and wanted to write themselves into the pages of art history by creating a movement/style. They made coordinated efforts to establish Calarts/Thin Line. The cult succeeded in establishing the style, but they birthed an abomination. Not only visually. These people neither graduated not hired with talent. They paid and sucked up their way, and they hired their teams based on that from the same school they themselves came from. As such none of them can write for shit.
The result was so awful that the target audience moved away from watching cartoons in favour of messing with phones and tablets. The only people watching that ugly vomit that passes for cartoons nowadays are adult fandoms who are lonely and and like the cartoons because of porn and shipping.
