Skintight masks like that are better for conveying expression/emotion a character may not show otherwise if it wasn't. Though featurless masks have their perks as well if you want the intimidation/distance factor. Depend son character I guess.

This is displayed in Cass's Batgirl run as her mask was skin tight and was able to emote by facial contours while Steph had a case of Spidey Eyes.

Just the eyes can convey plenty, if the artist knows how to make it work. But as Steph is such an expressive character, something like her Batgirl mask probably suits her best.

Stephanie's fun but they really didn't know what to do with her most of the time. That's why her being Batgirl was good, it gave her something to do. It just came at the expense of Cass and that's why some people hated her Batgirl run.

I've always thought that this was misplacing the blame. Cass's comeback Batgirl book sold terribly didn't it? Didn't last long before it was canceled. The writers fucked over Cass before they decided to give the book to Steph.

When someone's favorite character gets "replaced" by someone else then that character's fans are going to direct their anger at the replacement. Batgirl's a bit of a staple for DC so there'd have to be a comic about one. I don't blame Stephanie but I do feel that if she wasn't brought back to take over then Cass would have had a better chance at coming back.

There's an easy solution to this. Lean into her original concept by emphasizing her role as a saboteur. She's the Spoiler, yeah? Her entire reason for becoming a vigilante in the first place was to prevent her dad from being able to do crime. More of that.

The whole Batgirl line hasn't been handled well since she became Batgirl because it shuffled things around too much. She stopped being Spoiler and was dead for a bit, Cass got dumped and ignored for a long time, and Barbara would eventually get downgraded from being Oracle to being Batgirl again. All three were in great spots and seemed to regress as characters. At least Stephanie became Spoiler again during Tynion's run although she wasn't the most likeable character. Not sure if anything's been done with her since then.

It doesn’t seem likely. The whole concept of Reborn was a shakeup with who was holding what identity, and there was already an internal push from above for Babs’ return as Batgirl. If Steph hadn’t been offered up as an alternative, Babs almost certainly would’ve found her way back to the cowl even sooner than she did.
