Move it to a different studio

I wouldn't make it

Doubt a studio change will work so do it Sonic Boom style and give it amazing comedic timing and jokes.

adapt the kino 1993 film

Sure as fuck wouldn’t use Illumination.
Also I’d go full fantasy.
>Mario and Luigi get sucked through a pipe into the fantasy world of the games
>They get taking in by Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom while they try to figure out what happened
>Bowser and the Koopas break into the kingdom, steal Peach, and beat Mario and Luigi easily
>Mario, Luigi, and Toad set out to save Peach in different parts of their world, even meeting Yoshi, and learning that certain items in this world give them powers

Not that hard.

>kino
Kill yourself.

Mario and Luigi take care of a typical rescue plot in the first act, but then during the face off against Bowser, a terrifying entity threatens to erase Mario as both a character and a series forever, prompting them to travel between multiple points of game history and spinoffs. Many cameos and jokes are abound. Subplot about family and friends getting connected via Mario games, how language and age are irrelevant to enjoying Mario. No celebrity voices, but the family can be played by actors. Treat it like a celebration of the series, Bowser can contemplate betrayal but changes his mind when he sees a father and son bonding over Mario like he does with his, and Peach gets to be part of the cast following act 1. Maybe include a big war scene featuring all the obscure chars and spinoff stuff like Ready Player One except thematically consistent.

Why are you so scared of Illumination? It's not like Nintendo aren't watching their progress like a hawk for instance remember the rabbids crossover? Alright so the composer for that used the mario death jingle but his version was 1 note off the actual because of this Nintendo printed out and sent him the actual sheet music to get him to fix it

>“Whenever I was using Nintendo music, they would want to be involved to make sure that I was respectful to their original – and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It was pretty scary for me to think that the sound team at Nintendo were listening closely to my music though!”

>“They also had some feedback on some of the cinematic sequences when they felt that I’d maybe missed some of the emotions that Mario was expressing, but it was never very much – they were always super polite and so nice.”
