How did they do it? How did they manage to make the best Spuder-Man media in decades?

They used Arkham's combat system and wrote an enjoyable Peter Parker.

Because Insomniac is full of Spidey fans and they went to SONY asking if they could make their own game/universe. They got Chris Gage to help with the script, weren't bogged down by a specific canon, and they wanted to create a setting with a seasoned Peter/Spider-Man thus enabling them to pull from the character's entire history.

Most of this game was good, and personally I found it to be a far better adaptation than any live-action movie. However, there were some missteps here and there, namely the DLC, and Mary Jane Watson's characterization. But that aside, overall an enjoyable Spidey experience.

Ugliest costume in the game

They weren't tied to a deadline for an upcoming film or forcing out a Spider-Man game a year?

Like, I get the idea that they just spent a lot of time on this. I am baffled what they can do for the sequel, cause the moment people boot it up and see that their near identical map of NYC is being reused again and people would say "Lazy developers!"

>and see that their near identical map of NYC is being reused again and people would say "Lazy developers!"
Yeah that’s going to be a problem. The benefit of DC’s fake cities is you can do whatever you want with them and totally shake them up. But fucking ALL of Marvel is in NYC, like it’s completely fucking stupid. No point in making a Daredevil game because not only would it play the exact same, the map would be the exact same too

You get used to it, but yeah, I immediately switched back to classic Spidey.
I don't really see why the map would be an issue. Really the sequel should just expand upon the original, keeping all the costumes, landmarks, etc.

All they really need to do is have certain milestones happen, like for example how in the original game there was a widespread virus that dramatically changed the landscape of NY. Seeing the city go from normal, to chaos, back to normal is part of the adventure. But they should really add The Baxter Building next game. Easy explanation for why it was missing in the first game too
>"Doctor Doom shot The Baxter Building into another dimension, but we're fine now. Hey Spidey!"

>No point in making a Daredevil game because not only would it play the exact same, the map would be the exact same too
At least then it would always take place at night.

They got Gage? Regardless the game's overarching plot was done by Slott, right?
I'm seeing numerous Slott-era stuff in the game such as Yuri, Mr. Negative, F.E.A.S.T., and an extreme focus on Otto being the driving force. He loves Otto. There was also Silver Sable thrown in there which reminds me of how he had her show up intermittently throughout his run and then made her into a starring role in Ends of the Earth. When I realized this I just felt like I was playing a Slott comic, but if he had someone better to reel him back and remind him of how he wrote back when he was good.

to be fair the first game only uses Manhattan, they've got four more Boroughs of New York City they could insert into Spider-Man 2

indeed considering that the second game will almost definitely be a PS5 game, that is a very likely direction they'll go with as it'd be a good way to show off how much stronger the PS5 is over the PS4

Oh, yeah, Screwball, too, another Slott-era element. I think he made Yuri and Screwball both during the BND era or maybe he made Yuri after BND.

>Regardless the game's overarching plot was done by Slott, right?
That's false, and there's a shit ton of non-Slott related material in the game. The only involvement Dan Slott had with this game was being consulted regarding Mister Negative since he created him years ago and did jack shit with him. Outside of that, totally didn't write this plot. This had several in-house writers and Chris Gage working on it.

Speaking of Yuri, how shitty that they ruined her character in the DLC?

Yeah, because a shitton of Spider-mythos existed before Slott. I'm saying stuff that was more or less at the forefront of the game storywise which included Yuri's inclusion and Otto's importance which is pretty standard considering Ock is Slott's favorite villain.

Pretty shitty, but she does become Wraith in the comics. I was hoping it wouldn't happen, but it did. The base game ending was sad, but optimistic. The DLC ending just shat all over that and gave Peter a sad ending. It's not bad writing (except for Hammerhead, what the fuck) but it is depressing.

user not everything is traced back to fucking Slott because someone decided to use Doctor Octopus. They probably only used Yuri because they wanted a character that worked with the NYPD. It's not like Captain Stacy is an option here.

The fact it was written by Slott fucking floors me. Then again, it's easy to forget that he's a competent writer when he has the right title. I wonder how much freedom Slott was given when writing PS4 Peter. How much of it was Sony mandate and much of it was stuff Slott had written for Peter but wasn't allowed to do in 616. Questions for another day.

Post Your Favorite Spider-Man Game!!!! This is my first attempt ranking 3d titles so chances are it needs serious work.
>Ultimate Spider-Man
>Web of Shadows?
I still need to beat it but so far the gameplay puts it in its own category. The transitory combat between ground, air, and wall is SEAMLESS!!!! FUCKING SEAMLESS!!! The only thing holding it back is the god awful voice acting.
>Spider-Man 2 (PS2)
>Spider-Man (PS1)
>Spider-Man 3 (PS2)
>Enter Electro (PS1)
>Spider-Man 2002 (PS2)
>Spider-Man 3 (PS3)

Still need to beat PS4 but so far I'd either place it as the top spot alongside Ultimate or very very very slightly less. Combat still doesn't hold a candle to Web of Shadows despite superior swinigng.
Just out of curiousity, which Spidey game do you all prefer playing?

They took everything about Spider-Man 2 and just updated it. Not necessarily a bad thing, they're both great games, but it's not that hard to make a great spider-man game.

>Arkham's combat system
Which was based on the combat system of the Spider-Man 2 game

>The fact it was written by Slott fucking floors me.
IT WASN'T WRITTEN BY FUCKING SLOTT! Jesus, how do people keep making this mistake?

>Because Insomniac is full of Spidey fans
Doesn't sound like it if they hired Dan Slott and forced Miles into the story.

It looks much better in motion but their are enough costumes in the game where you never really have to look at it

Spidey 2 and PS4 are tied for the top spot. Ultimate was fun, Web of Shadows was ok, I like 1 for the nostalgia factor, never played 3.

It not like the other games after web of shadows were utter shit

>This had several in-house writers and Chris Gage working on it.
WHo is considered lead writer? Who can I thank for the bulk of the story? I'm this dude.
This might be a stupid question, but is anyone else floored by the disconnect between Spider-Man 2 (PS2) and Spider-Man 3 (PS2)? Treyarch developed the third game for next gen hardware and I guess they demanded too much because the game played like dogshit. The ps2 version was instead made by the people that made Enter Electro, and interestingly I think they made the superior game.

I'm not sure if the PS2 swinging is copyrighted to high hell, but Visions did their best at making an engine and while it didn't have near the complexity, it was fucking smoooooooth. Silky smooth. The fact the story was better and the combat was more varied, and the fact you could switch to the black suit at will, the game was just plain better on every front.
>What's most fascinating is that the entire PS2 game was ported to the PSP and due to the recent advances in emulation, it plays even better than its console counterpart.

captain stacey could've been an option and so could've jean dewolf. I liked Yuri in the game but its obvious she was chosen for diversity's sake

>hired Dan Slott
He didn't write shit for this game. They literally just asked him "Hey, so is this okay for Mister Negative? You didn't really give us much to work with".
>Forced Miles into the story
You do realize Bendis created Miles, right? Moreover, he's arguably better than the comic version because he's not from another universe, nor is he forced down our throats as Peter's replacement.
I'm assuming Chris Gage? Might want to check the credits again.
>captain stacey could've been an option
Fucking how? Gwen doesn't even exist in this universe.
>She was chosen because of muh diversity
No she was chosen because she's played by Yuri Lowenthal's wife, the actor who played Peter

Getting something average in times of drought tends to have that effect.

We don't know gwen doesn't exist in this universe and in all likelihood they're going to drop the ball and pair her with miles.

They could always do a Saints Row IV, which completely recontextualized the map from The Third in such a way that anyone who complained clearly hadn't played the game.

>We don't know gwen doesn't exist in this universe
Actually we do
>No mention of her AT ALL when Peter/MJ reminisce about the old days hanging with Harry
>No references to Captain Stacy
>No references to Gwen dying
>Norman Osborn hasn't even become the Green Goblin yet
I assume she was cut out because Marvel is kind of dead set on replacing 616 Gwen Stacy with Ghost Spider

This is directed to any fan that loves Spidey games.

>Which Spidey game had the best swinging?
It's a tossup between Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man PS4 (although I haven't played enough of the latter to form the best opinion). Love to hear thoughts on the differences.
Which one had the best combat?
Web of Shadows hands down. I can swing kick and enemy into the air, combo them, and then smack them back down to the ground just to continue swinging.
>Which one had the best main campaign?
Ultimate Spider-Man tied with Spider-Man PS4.
>Which one had the best side quests?
This one is difficult and can't form a solid opinion.
>Which one had the best unlocikables?
PS1 Spider-Man hands down. It gives and gives and gives. Ultimate Spider-Man gives us Venom however. My only issue is the lack of costume variety and no real side content.
