>never read X-Books past random issues here and there >find the concept intresting and tons of character designs are ace >decide to start reading >go through most of the major series, like Uncanny, New Mutants, X-Factor,etc >most of them are eh and the characters are flat, mostly relying on their "character X is Y and Z" traits >it wouldn't be so bad if they weren't confined to their fixed positions with the same stories being recycled over and over >Claremont's overwordiness is passable enough and he gives them distinct voices, but not enough to make me care >past him they start deteriorating to the point where they become literal trash by the mid/late 90s and 00s >end up having wasted time and come out dissapointed, wishing that those characters that attracted me existed in other books so that they could've been more "independent" Do you have any such stories? Where something caught your eye and you got into it excited, but came out feeling pretty dissapointed, thinking that it could've been done a whole lot better? I jumped over runs, got to know different characters, but nothing clicked. Even the good years weren't as good as say, something like Moore's Swamp-Thing or Luther Arkwright, so I was banking on liking the characters, but... I "liked" them simply based off the concepts. Sinister being a Gothic Vampire Scientist guy is cool, but his character ranges from swallow to just being a wacky faggot, with the only interesting bits being "TFAOC&P". And as you progress past Claremont, you come to stuff like the Inferno finale, which was literally a single issue of 12 muties ganging up on Sinister while speaking like it was the 60s and offering major retcons. It was absymal. And that's not even going to Austen or Post-PDA X-Factor territory.
Dunno, I guess I came out thinking "Mystique would've been better tangling with Widow and Iron Man", "Sinister would've been a better Earthbound HE", "Magik would've been better as a magic-side character" and so on.
I suppose I just feel that were they all independent characters, they might have been more than just the cardboard boxes forced to interact in the same books and the same stories over and over again. The concepts are good, most of the costumes are great, but the executions all leave something to be desired. Maybe it's on me as I was expecting a whole lot more than just "good enough capeshit". Maybe it's because with all other team books most of the characters have their own solos, so they have room for fleshing out that the X-Men don't.

That's every Marvel series. They make the most bland generic uninteresting books in the industry. Which is why any time people think about good comics they think DC. Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Long Halloween, Kingdom Come, Watchmen, Morrison's Batman stuff, etc and Marvel doesn't even enter the conversation.
Jackson Nelson
>watch genndy's clone wars as a kid >it blows my fucking little boy mind >"holy shit this star wars thing is amazing, i have to watch the movies" I ended up thinking Star Wars was the lamest shit in the world.
Blake Richardson
>any time people think about good comics they think >Killing Joke >Long Halloween >Kingdom Come God knows why. Is it the art?
Eli Ramirez
You don't read. You are looking for affirmation of your own ideas (which are probably terrible).
I don't believe you like anything. You just look for things to "fix" because you have control issues.
Sebastian Evans
>these stories are hailed as really good >some random faglord doesn't like them due to shit taste >therefore everyone who likes them must be wrong The real problem is (You)
Eli Morris
>samefagging >being this triggered >projecting >acting as if I generalized instead of proving context for the thread >phoneposting Why are you such a gaynigger, user?
Alright, go take a nap. People disagree in the real world.
Mason Watson
I know how you mean, OP.
Ignore the hush mob, expectations are a show of flattering views of an idea's potential from its audience, not a put down of it as a whole.
Something failing to meet those expectations does't mean it's irrevocably bad, and I'm not saying you're saying that I'm just clarifying for everyone else confusing your remarks for it or the belief in that idea itself, it just means more could or can be done. I'm not sure why that should be an offensive thought to anyone.
Christopher Taylor
That was the best Jean costume. I miss it like you wouldn't believe. Though it's not as good without the hair.
Angel Brown
Claremont sucks. His soap opera shit has aged incredibly poorly. For X-Men you’re better off reading Carey, Whedon, Morrison, Hickman, or any of the 21st century writers
Robert Williams
>Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Long Halloween, Kingdom Come, Watchmen, Morrison's Batman stuff, etc and Marvel doesn't even enter the conversation. To hipsters who don't read many comics those are the standard pics because they're "dark" and "dark = mature". No actual comic fan would deny there have been great Marvel runs.
Parker Sanchez
Are you using your hands and fingers to turn your thoughts into text through the power of the keyboard and the computer, so that I can read them and see that you don't find Claremont entertaining but rather boring and soapish? Is that what you are doing user? Is this your response to the OP?
Bad opinion. Claremont's run was better than any of those guys and everything they do is just them playing in the sandbox he built anyway. I would rather read a lot of actual content than flip through an overly decompressed picture book any day.
Bentley Roberts
You need decompression to truly convey emotions. But story... that's a tricky one.
Juan Miller
>Which is why any time people think about good comics they think DC No, that's because Marvel doesn't have that many one-shots or limited series like DC and instead has great runs and arcs that casuals don't fucking read.
Robert Baker
>or any of the 21st century writers You're so fucking full of shit it's not even funny.
Tyler Taylor
>and instead has great runs and arcs that casuals don't fucking read. Name ten (10).

Nothing is universally agreed upon. I mean you’ll never convince me Killing Joke or Kingdom Come are great comics or even good comics, for example. Here are some runs that are widely lauded, though. Kirby FF Kirby Thor Ditko Lee ASM Conway ASM Stern ASM Moench’s Master of Kung Fu Claremont UXM Tomb of Dracula Simonson Thor Steranko Shield Hickman FF Miller Dare Devil
I’d even argue that DC’s best comics are also found in longer form. The one shots just aren’t that great in comparison to something like Moore’s Swamp Thing, Morrison’s Doom Patrol, or even books like Kamandi or Sweet Tooth.
Justin Kelly
>Kirby FF Overhyped. >Kirby Thor Eh. >Ditko Lee ASM I suppose. >Conway ASM >Stern ASM Passable. >Moench’s Master of Kung Fu Really now? >Claremont UXM Overrated. >Tomb of Dracula >Simonson Thor >Steranko Shield Great. >Hickman FF So-So in the grand scheme of things, but the best FF run. >Miller Dare Devil Sure.
The question is, can they compete with Sandman, Swamp-Thing, etc?
Xavier Ortiz
> Nothing is universally agreed upon
Thanks for being completely predictable, though. And I do mean thoroughly. > The question is... No that wasn’t the question at all. But it’s all you’re getting out of me.
Jeremiah Diaz
art is essential. it doesn't have to be "pretty" but needs to tell the story well and fit the theme. the artist is actually retelling you the writer's script. the writer is only as good as his artist is.
Nicholas Turner
>REEEEEEE I CAN'T DEFEND MY OPINION AND ARGUMENTS REEEEEE
it's sandman for me. couldn't get into the art. not even suspension of disbelief. transmet too. hated the main character as well. maybe i'm just too old. couldn't finish most of tezuka's works either. there was always that feeling of hyperproduction, like he was trying to shove as much stuff as possible. fell too. horrible art: fake, cropped, shopped. the color was nice though.
Easton Perry
>defending subjective opinions >typing in all caps. But why?
This is all subjective you cock eating retard, he could say whatever the fuck and you can reply with "lol no" to everything and fucking nothing would go anywhere. You've already done that with your stupid "yeah but are they as good as sandman and man thing?".
Thomas Ortiz
Don't know if it quite counts as dissapointment, but for some reason I just cannot get into Hellboy. I somewhat enjoy reading it, and I can recognize that something great is happening in the page, but for some reason it just doesn't click with me in the way that, say, Kirby's work does.
