I always figured it was a similar situation with American Dad as it was with The Simpsons and Futurama. The appearance of that Seth McFarlane Cartoon Cavalcade thing or whatever made no sense to me either, I figured it was there to draw emphasis away from the cutaways on the show itself so they could get back to at least writing somewhat cohesive episodes but the show just doubled down on cutaways after the revival.
