Jihad actually just refers to any personal struggle in Islam that you recognize as being critical to your life, it's most well-known in the military context but isn't necessarily so. Nah. Crusade an Jihad aren't synonymous terms. The lesser Jihad is a fight against an external threat. The greater jihad is a fight against an internal threat. Jihad has always been a lot more involved, as a word, than crusade has.

That's a lie tho, a crusade is a military movement. A jihad is something you can do with yourself or others and is basically a spiritual practice.

Crusade and Jihad are not the same thing, referring to Jihad strictly in a militant light is actually a Western misconception. Jihad is often used during the declaration of war to underscore that it's expressly religious in nature, but is not limited only to warfare.
