Most things that are extremely popular have a visible sect of annoying fans. I'm a huge fan of SU, but this is only the second time I've ever even mentioned it on the internet.

If you personally hate something popular enough, you'll find a reason to meme yourself into believing [specific show/movie/artist] is bad, and attracts "the worst kind of people".

Ironically, Yas Forums's contrarian bullshit culture even convinced me that SU was LGBT propaganda fluff, but then I watched some and I actually liked it. Letting other people color your perceptions of things instead of deciding for yourself is sheep behavior.

Yeah, you know, that doesn't really hold up when you take into consideration SU fans are so crazy about coming across as "progressive" that they bullied Rebecca Sugar and called her racist for including this in the art book and she had to issue a formal apology with an announcement that it would be taken out in reprints.
