As much as I unironically enjoyed this, I don't know how far they can take the premise.
Maybe it's because I don't have any creativity at all, but the concept of "Guys that get hired to make people smile" would be okay for a little while, but eventually you'd run out of steam with that. How many times can you have an episode of "guy is depressed/has a problem, the main cast solves the problem".
I'm not saying it wouldn't be good, but I could only see it maybe running for a season. If they wanted to go further than that I fear it would drift away from it's central premise like a lot of shows do.
>can't turn this premise into a series You have no imagination
Connor Collins
if aqua teen hunger force can go on for 10+ seasons and a movie without a real premise. this show will be fine.
Aaron Gray
I think it can make a series, just not a long lasting one.
Gabriel Scott
Is this that cartoon that caused that Newgrounds Style meme?
Brayden Peterson
Any premise could be turned on its state of fucking existence in the right hands
Jeremiah Green
"Smiling friends" is a vague enough title so that they could just shift the focus if the concept gets stale
Asher Myers
Well that's sort of my point. ATHF didn't really have a premise so that gave them room to do more of what they wanted. They weren't as limited.
Smiling friends premise doesn't seem bad I just can't see them stretching it out for 5+ seasons. That is unless, like I said, they drift away from the initial premise.
Joseph Martin
Most adult swim shows only do 6 episodes a season now. At most 10. You really think they can't come up with that many each year?
Nathan Young
>Maybe it's because I don't have any creativity at all, Congrats, you just explained what's wrong with most of this board
Carson Stewart
like I said, you have no imagination
Ryan Wood
Not every Spongebob episode is just about him leaving in his pineapple, they were so creative with their jokes and setups in the pilot I'm sure they have enough imagination to make the show work
Levi Perez
>in the right hands And there's the issue then, mate.
Blake White
>leaving meant living
Carter Price
Sometimes shows have to drive away from their central premise to flesh the characters out further.
Sometimes it works to the point the premise becomes a chekhov's gun in a way, like in Billy and Mandy where they need to go to supernatural court to settle Grim's custody at the beginning, sometimes it doesn't like in Adventure Time where people felt Finn's need for a gf distracted him from his aforementioned adventures.
Julian Watson
In the first episode of ATHF they're detectives.
Landon Lee
Quantum Leap lasted 5 seasons, each episode was basically "Sam inhabits someone's body at an awkward time, quickly figures out where, when and who he is and has to use his knowledge of the future to fix something, more often than not keeping someone from dying."
If that can be repeated for nearly 100 episodes without being as repetitive as Regular Show, someone can make a show about a couple of clowns good for a few seasons.
Brody Gonzalez
>can't turn this premise into a series Mate, Aqua Teen exists. Anything can become a beloved series if it's executed well enough, premise doesn't have to matter. Aqua Teen had so much less to work with and that was cut short somehow. And even then., there are so many ways you could take "Guys hired to make people smile." It's a job they have that gives them a clear objective for the end of each episode(though they don't necessarily have to accomplish this given strong enough characters and comedy).
Jaxson Adams
Like Michael Cusack?
Aiden Torres
It's not a limiter, it's a guideline for creativity to work with. Aqua teen had something like that at first but never really ran out of creative situations with the main cast(arguable, some seasons are better than others, but it never really ran out of steam, so much so people felt it was cut short).
You don't have to have them solve a smiling problem every episode, but it helps with generating ideas down the line.
Noah Thompson
theyre basically social workers that help insane people with unreasonable requests pepper in some drama with the main characters families or boss, and add an overarching plot of pim getting more and more depressed or corrupted boom, you've got a show
Lincoln Edwards
>and add an overarching plot of pim getting more and more depressed or corrupted Don't pull a fucking Rick & Morty on us. Go full episodic, ATHF style.
Robert Edwards
If Phineas and Ferb can have 4 seasons and 2 movies with the same premise then Smiling Friends can have at least 1
Aiden Thompson
any word on if its picked up or not
Tyler Green
>Go full episodic, ATHF style. this, i'm so tired of comedy shows trying to be serious, deep or have deepest lore, just make me laugh damn it.
Henry White
make sure to help these guys get some views on the [as] youtube channel
Not every episode has to revolve around their job. You can just have the characters hanging out and getting into dumb hijinks. Not every Spongebob episode has him working at the Krusty Krab.
Josiah Richardson
>ATHF didn't really have a premise
Yes it did. They were detectives.
Logan James
It reminds me of the plot of Uncle Grandpa where it's some guy going around trying to help children.
Anthony Bailey
>unironically enjoying anything to come out of the morally depraved terrorist-grooming quasi-fascistic neo-Nazi cesspool known as Newgrounds user, I...
I think I recall them saying they had several episodes already good to go but they'll be sparingly aired for holidays and the like. [as] didn't just greenlight them for 1 episode as far as I know.
