The adventuring party is only seen in wanted posters and via the after-effects of their actions. Let's say they travel from Island to Island, full One Piece rip off, but island to island means we get to do the Kino no Tabi approach of having each island have some gimmick for our protagonist to exploit
If we wanna go petulant edgelord what we do is frame the adventuring party members as bad for the world. I don't think that's quite good enough though, as easy and fun as it'd be to do. I think what we wanna do is make the party members seem like the heroes of a story that's really cool, both for speculation purpose and to give the story more depth than a vindictive isekai.
The protag should be opportunistic, sort of a more vicious Tressa from Octopath, but melacholy
