You think Todd would really change that much in the future? It seems like he's pretty secure of himself. Aside from being poor, he's otherwise doing well, especially in regards to Ester or Reggie.

I don't think he was replaced due to diversity concerns, or at least not solely so. The pilot is pretty different from the show and of the more pressing aspects is the fact it was more comedic. Shane seems better as a foil to Reggie's wackiness than as a more serious character like Todd.

Todd’s a good kid. Pretty level headed, knows how to act responsibly, can hook himself a girlfriend and tardwrangles his sisters and Reggie like a pro. His only hang ups seem to be about his brother but that’s very minor in the scheme of things.
Ester’s not too bad either, especially compared to Reggie. She’s maybe a bit sheltered and naive but she can be plenty sociable, as seen with Reggie’s mom. She probably change too much when she grows up beyond developing more of a backbone.
Reggie is a complete fucking mess, but we all know that.
