But that's not what the ego is, that's some retarded stoner bullshit. The ego is a specific freudian concept that doesn't actually apply in neuroscience. Not only does he not accurately describe the ego, we've moved past the concept itself in our understanding of the brain.

He was a philosophical writer who explored the political implications of his philosophy. You're correct that "The Ego and Its Own" is a pretty shit translation which only has so much influence because it was the ONLY translation for like a century.
His philosophy is deeply tied to his conception of "the self" (such as it exists) though.
