The pacing was terrible. Making scorpion the hero, explaining his backstory and spending so much time before the tournament was a poor decision. It blazes through the climax.
Also, having Liu Kang lose to Goro only to be saved by Gary Stu powerlevel Scorpion was dumb. How are we supposed to believe he can beat Shao Khan when he won the tournament by forfeit?

Honestly why bother with anything after the shitfest that was MK11? Bad story, boring slow gameplay with matches that take forever, writers playing favorites (Scorpion wank, the complete bullshit they did with Frost, Sektor and Cyrax). The games will just have rosters that'll barely use characters past UMK3 and the times they do will be ones that Boon personally likes (Kenshi and Bo Rai Cho) even though most of the 3D era characters aren't any worse than a lot of the 2D characters or Kombat Kids.

It felt way too short, unoriginal and all over the place.
All the fights were over in the blink of an eye, each character's introduction was rushed (especially sonya's witch also felt forced, but I can't figure out why), scorpion's escape was promising at first , but quickly went to shit, most main characters jobbed hard and died and the story was almost identical to every other iteration.
The visuals were good, though. If it were an original film with new characters it'd be a decent popcorn flick, but I think it wasted it's potential using pre-existing characters.
Everyone knows what happened, we've been told that a million times, already. The focus should have been entirely on scorpion since his name was in the title set around the tournament with occasional glimpses at the other fights.

No it doesn't. In the '95 movie, Johnny and Shang specifically work out a deal that states Johnny can skip the entire bracket and fight Goro early but in exchange, Shang becomes the championship bout and gets to pick his own challenger.
In this movie, Scorpion killing Goro before Liu is actually defeated means the final battle will be Liu versus Scorpion. Scorpion then forfeits.
