You misread it, lad. I mean that "Gothic" as a subculture is a dumb fad made by the music companies in the late 70s.
We already had "goth" music and style before it (Velvet Underground, The Marble Index by Nico, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Leonard Cohen) and that's just music. Think of Gothic architecture...

Edith Piaf was "goth" before "goth" she literally made songs about dying to be with her love.
Also, think of existentialist philosophers like Camus or Sartre, even Kierkegaard.
Books like Dracula, Frankenstein. Poets like Eliot and Poe...

it was an epithet that evolved into an aesthetic. of course there were precursors to what eventually became goth, just like any subculture. music and culture wise, goth died in the late 00's. i really wish the aesthetic died with it, because styles are nothing without context.

Yeah, the problem is people trying hard to be "goth". I mean, Leonard Cohen can be seen as goth but he's just a poet. Like Jim Morrison. Hell, even my mother who only wishes for death is more Gothic than any dyes hair try hard out there.
