Let me explain to you how JJ Abrams works as a showrunner. He has major involvement getting the production off the ground, helps write the pilot and first few episodes, then fucks off and cashes the checks. And that's assuming he's directly working on the project and it's not just being run through his production company. You need to look at the other major figures in the production, because they're more than likely the ones who will be actually running the show.
