This isn't true. Youtube is also heavily skewed in favor of view time over total views. Zach's "get out of my car" video only grossed him 1000 dollars. While a let's player getting 50,000 views per video a day will make far more than that. Also you're point about jokes not having to be structured is also false. Some shit can get away with that but it's not like every online animation is just non-context random bullshit.
You're saying smiling friends falls into the latter but the entire episode was structured and the jokes related to the plot. You're also contradicting yourself, you're saying that a TV show needs understand everything at any point in time but you can't do that if you have any sort of set up or structure.
