Looking back, Shrek 1 is the only truly good one of the franchise. 2 has its moments, but it neither holds up nor justifies its existence. 3 and Forever After were pure mediocrity

2 was better than 1
4 was miles better than 3 and almost at 2's level
Wrong. 1 is better than 2. It's just a more heartfelt, sincere and timeless film. 2 was the precursor of Shark Tale
My order would be pretty much this.
2.
1.
4.
3.
that's everybody order
Scratch that, 1 before 2. Thanks
2 and Shark Tale are pretty similar. They are both filled with pop culture references, product placement ( Farbucks, Coral Cola ) and celebrity cameos. I actually hold a soft spot for Shark Tale, but it's not a respectable film
Is it wrong if i consider Shark Tale, and Bee Movie for that matter, to be better than 3 and 4 ? They're certainly more entertaining and interesting imo
Shrek 1 had its pop culture references too. Remember when Fiona does a Matrix kick?
i prefer 2 over 1 but honestly it would've been better if neither 3 or 4 existed
Hell, Donkey has been pop culture reference: the character since his first scene.
But those moments were a rarity in 1, whereas they're the rule in 2. The humor in 1 is far more character driven and holds up better. Also, Shrek is far more interesting as a lonely bachelor than as a married guy imo
2 is better though
2 is so overloaded with pop culture references that even the DVD menu was just a Brady Bunch reference
Never understood why critics always say that Shark Tale relied too much on pop culture references, when the movie had plenty of real jokes. If anything, Shrek 2 and Madagascar were the ones that went too far with the references
All of these movies besides Shrek 3 and 4 worked for me when I was a kid who didn't get the references. And I was out of the age range for those other 2.
1 works as its own thing to this day imo. The humor was character driven, as it should be. 2 only works if you get the references, and they're very dated references nowadays, so the film feels stuck in 2004. 3 actually tried to go for real jokes, but they were really unfunny most of the time. 4 didn't even have jokes, took itself too seriously
I honestly don't think 2 does. I watched this week. And when I'm saying the films in this thread I'm including Madagascar and Shark Tale. Like, when I was a kid watching it I had no idea Move It was a real song, I thought it was just a quirky song Julian liked and it worked for me.
Madagascar 1 definitely has the worst references in a dreamworks film imo. They were not even trying to be subtle anymore
Looking back, Shark Tale did some things better than the Shrek films. It was more colorful and visually appealing, didn't rely so much on toilet humor, soundtrack was better, and it was more cutesy and lighthearted, not as cynical or crude
See, I still don't get that reference and it works as a joke for me. Not an example of comedic genius but not something that makes me look at it in disdain.
As an example of the joke-references in Madagascar working even if you don't get the reference

I've never seen American Beauty and would never have caught this if the internet hadn't pointed it out to me. The joke about him going crazy from not having steak still works.
True. It works even if you don't get the reference. Compare this to Shark Tale, which has a reference to this commercial for no reason other than the main character being called Oscar. It only works if you get it. youtube.com
Pretty much the only acceptable answer.
What is everyone's issue with the 3rd movie? I didn't see anything wrong with it. If anything, I didn't feel much for 4
1 is the best, but 2 is still great.
3 was crap and that is universally agreed. Personally I thought 4 wasn't as good but definitely solid.
Never saw the spinoff shit.
It's just a very unpleasent movie. There's just something very hateable about it ( Fiona's father having such a distateful death, Shrek just forcing this teenager to become king whether he likes it or not, Charming planning to kill Shrek in front of everyone during a play, mean spirited jokes and a complete lack of heart, etc
Especially since a big part of Shrek 1 and 2 are about realizing you don't have to confirm to society's expectations of you. It goes directly against the philosophy espoused by the previous films.
In which sense ? Could you explain it better ?
4>1&2>power gap>PS2 tie in for Shrek The Third>3
1 easily has the better script. It was written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, the guys who wrote Aladdin ( the animated one, not the remake )
In 1 Shrek and Fiona learn they don't have to be the scary ugly ogre or the perfect princess to find happiness and do so again in 2, along with the King being forced to be a frog while still being "worthy". They respect who they want to be and who they are. That flies directly in the face of Shrek forcing a boy who doesn't want to be king to take the thrown.
