sparing the emperor was a big part of Japan accepting US occupation after the war and turning them into an ally while rebuilding them post war. In attempting to create a vassal state the US made a competitor that crushed them in the 80s on technology but then stagnated heavily in the years beyond.

Japanese emperors haven't had a real power for like 1000 years. It really shouldn't be called “emperor” in the first place. It should be called tenno like the Japs do. It's much more of a religious figure.
