Blame Matt Gayning for popularizing ugly cartoons. This isn't new.

Its not all animation but for some reason animators have started going way more wacky with character designs, like the latest Disney shorts with the huge asses and barrel chests. But in the OP, there's a huge clash between how abstract and exagerated their faces are vs their bodies. If their bodies were as oddly proportioned, their faces wouldn't stick out as ugly.

It looks like they really didn't want the faces to look pretty more than to make them cartoony because it's the only fucked up part.

because caring about superficial things like beauty and power levels is how you get anime where everything boils down to how cool, attractive and powerful you are.

A more down to earth narrative that cares about it's characters more deeply complements a style that doesn't put stock into making everyone a highschool heart throb.

Pretty much this. Mainstream western artists/cartoonists, and vidya developers desu, feel the need to create "realistic" women, despite the fact that there are so many beautiful women that DO exist in reality.

Also application of realitistic facial movements on cartoon faces tend to make it ugly. Either remake the conventions done from disney to Japanese cartoons or just reinvent how old painters did it.

Also a respectable opinion. I feel the same way, which is why I personally watch more anime than western animation. It IS true that 90% of anime is shit, but that 10% makes it worthwhile.
There are literally thousands of anime with interesting/unique artstyles. To start, look towards most Studio Ghibli films.
