Add some kind of trait that would be exaggerated for comedy but also used seriously. I would first try and make his romance with hawkgirl genuinely compelling. Then I would make his autistic devotion to her a main character trait. Just to add some flavour because it would contrast well with his usual stoicism.

he has this essense of pulpy hero. A shirtless Indiana Jones and Flash Gordon in one persone. He can go on adventure into forgoten jungle temple in the morning, fly into space to fight galactic conquer from planet Xenu at lunch and solving crimes at night. He was there, he saw it all. He has not time for anybody bullshit. He had died a thousand time, lost the loved once and can remember to most of it. There is nothing to improve. Just stay faithful to the pulp... and dont go nose deep into the reincarnation whirpool. Venditit finally turned into something salvageable.
