Is Calvin and Hobbes really that good, or does it look better because most comic strips suck?
The later
It's not funny it's just adorable, it's also admirable how the author knew exactly what he wanted and never sold out.
It's definitely good, and honestly both those things can be true at once
it really is that good and it looks better because most comic strips suck. It could be considered the last truly great newspaper comic strip.
But really, it has the extraordinary benefit of a creator knowing when to finish and bow out on top instead of becoming a zombie brand selling health insurance and frozen burritos.
Pieces like this remind me that Bill basically conquered traditional newspaper print comics as a medium. I can't think of any who come close to his prowess in the field.
When Bill Watterson cuts loose it takes giants like Seuss to match him. Calvin and Hobbes has flaws, but it is still uniquely drawn and written well enough.
Is really good.
Yes to both questions.
it's both
>pregnant woman stops at the hospital on her way home from work to give birth
Didn't remember that detail. That's really cute in that "this is how 6 year old's logic works" way.
>Conquered a medium
That's really weird to think about, but it's true.
But part of me wonders if that was because he was a master playing in a lower weight class. I'd like to see him try his hand at a graphic novel or something.
I...can't really enjoy it anymore with what the world has become, let's leave it like that.
>he was a master playing in a lower weight class
He was like Rembrandt doing a series for DC comics.
Let's get this out of the way now:
Did or did not Susie and Calvin grow up and get married?
Probably, given that Calvin was like 60% a self-insert for Watterson and Susie was an insert for his wife, by the former's own admission
Most of the fanmade sequels seem to go that route, though none of them really capture the magic
Why was there no show?
because Watterson didn't like the idea of Calvin having an official voice
apparently it creeped him out
How did Watterson conquer the medium?
>wanting a souless adaptation
Watterson himself stated that he got out of the game specifically to avoid it becoming stale. He wanted to leave people wanting more rather than leave them sick of it.
I mean can you think of another artist who got as varied with their style as him? Even when characters are on model he bothered to do dynamic poses and shading when it was needed. He actually seemed like he had fun with his work.
Maybe if it played out like Astro Fighter Sunred. Calvin and Susie are married, all the wacky crazy shit is real but just floating in the background.
shut the fuck up, Dobson
Creative layout use.
>this fucking NEWSPAPER CARTOONIST called us out
>who the fuck does he think he is
>better call him pretentious
I love C&H but Watterson seemingly doesn't understand that subtlety is a thing. Not every single message needs to (or will) be spelled out out loud, and there's nothing fucking wrong with that. People are free to express themselves however they want. Besides, people will always unintentionally put a bit of their subconscious thoughts into their work, by the very nature of art itself.
I'm sure Watterson understands that subtlety exists. He rarely criticizes the actual art, just the attitude of artists. Even in the first strip I posted there, he's less criticizing the work being more abstract, and more criticizing the artist's need for an artist's statement to explain the work.
Kek, so THIS is what it's like: becoming the person you swore to stand against.
Post the image, you know the one
The one where Calvin's mom is about to pleasure some faceless hairy fat man
