That sounds very odd since normally Japan loves anything from or related to Hawaii. I've been to Japan twice and whenever locals heard that I'm from Hawaii, they would suddenly get very exited and impressed (even though I'm the whitest person in a 100 mile radius) and start asking me a bunch of questions about Hawaii in broken english.
That plus their obsession with loli makes it hard to imagine that they wouldn't like a movie/show about a little hawaiian girl.
