What killed the Comic Book Market as a whole, not just this current bubble burst?
What killed the Comic Book Market as a whole, not just this current bubble burst?
SJWs can't write for shit.
Any other answer is a deflection from this undeniable fact.
>killed
Wrong word. It's just stagnancy.
The issue is form factor. Floppies are not a mainstream format. People who already love comics will argue from sunup til sundown why floppies are great, but they're preaching to a niche choir. The non-comics reading public doesn't think this, they embraced manga instead. So either they just don't like the content, or they don't like floppies.
Not to mention the prices of floppies
the convoluted history of comicbooks and the many high costs for writing a comicbook.
Because 99% of Marvel and DC stories are trash to the point mediocre shit like Morrison Green Lantern and Al Ewing Hulk comics are considered the best shit ever.
>Not to mention the prices of floppies
That's actually related to the form factor. A small amount of content is very difficult to price. If it's priced too high, then readers don't feel it's a good buy. But if it's too cheap, then it's a hassle for retailers to handle and stock. Booksellers already consider floppies a money waster, that's why they don't care to carry it.
Remember when Warren Ellis did the $2 pricing experiment a decade back? I think it was for Transmetropolitan. Many comics were against them because they felt it was "leaving money on the table." Some were so against it that they refused to carry it.
phone/tablet comics are the future.
This bs that cuts out the middle man where the money now goes straight to the creator.
Once marvel and dc go the way of the dodo, there will be a power vacuum.
Indy creators are gonna fill that void.
The next harry potter will come from the american comic book industry and i promise it wont be in the super hero genre. Greener pastures boys!
This guy has the main chunk of it. Floppy comics lost viability years ago, and are too expensive on top of that, as said.
Another major flaw is Diamond distribution and the direct market (comic shops) which create an environment that newfags/normies are too intimidated to approach.
Also worth mentioning is the rise of woke politics, and the role social media plays in regards to the conflict between content creators and customers. We've reached a boiling point in tensions between ideologies, and it ultimately makes both sides look unappealing to newfags. It's a battle of attrition.
But the comic book market is just fine corona aside obviously sales were up last year.
This is the truth. Any time you see an "SJW" (we need a different word for that, something that means 'destroyer of stories' preferably) take a book, there's a quality nosedive immediately after. (Bendis and Stillerson are the ones I remember offhand) They just don't give a care about the worlds they're given, happily tearing the setting up by the roots because of their moral imperative.
A combination of inserting ideological/current political shit combined with gimmicky large-scale crossovers instead of actually focusing on telling a good one-shot story or story arc. Those and the crushing majority of new characters seem horribly bland and made to cater to a small minority.
Combine it with that the retards made sure Diamond had a monopoly on comic distribution, something that would've been fatal later on and it showed, simply caused the whole industry to collapse.
Still waiting for Battle Chasers to continue. Nightwar ain't enough.
Used to be, the genre was created by people punching well below their weight because they were adults.
But now, the industry is run by people who were weaned on comics which were created by people who grew up reading comics.
God only knows what a next generation would have turned out like if there would have been one.
Not enough panels of Zatanna's sweaty Leggings
Nepotism
Bad writing existed before SJWs
What was the difference then?
It was awesome bad.
And boobies.
It wasn’t preachy and condescending political bullshit.
bad writing mixed with political ideologies being prioritized over character or stories
Premise matters more than execution.
Marvel. This was the third time.
The lack of true endings. It's really hard for new readers to get into comics, because there is no clear starting and stopping points. All the crossovers, and reboots, and a combination of the two. Wanna get into Superman? What are your opinions on these fifty different writers? Which soft reboots to you have to read to make sense of it all? Where should you stop, because the team changed and ruined everything? Wanna get into One Piece? You just pick up One Piece chapter 1, or One Piece episode 1.
Distribution monopoly. Diamond and its rules fucked over the growth of comics and a whole, indie and big 2 alike.
Over reliance on a steadily shrinking retail distribution network.
Even Dave Sim understood the appeal of this
Of course, bad writing will always exist and happen. Problem with recent SJW influx is they're not really INTERESTED in writing as much as preaching their message. Everything else is secondary. In a healthy and sane industry these people would've been fired a decade ago.
Never ending status quo
Mainstream comics never really recovered from the burst of the 90s speculator bubble. They kept trying to coax those buyers back instead of moving on and adapting to new market norms. And since the big publishers use the exactly the same distribution company as the small publishers the whole industry got dragged down together.
I honestly wonder what galaxy brain genius decided glossy paper should replace newsprint. Latter was really why comics were so cheap, but it's like with years they increasing production costs while their audience numbers plummeted. Someone with a business degree must have looked at these finances and scratched their head for a second.
Is Bloodstrike real? This isn't just a parody of the 90's but an actual thing from the 90's?
