King of the Hill

I’m not gonna sugar coat it. Why is Luanne so goddamn stupid?
She seems to have solid self-reflection when it comes to projecting with her puppets so points for that but goddamn man. Points for the crew not writing her with a mental situation like that dude at the racetrack- this is something that’s all her own.
But still- why?
How does she, I don’t even know. Function? She grew up surrounded by all broken family shit that so maybe she really does have that as the sole reason but it doesn’t feel that way.

Like, putting two and two together is something even animals can do. I mean, I’m just really impressed with the writing here, and subsequently frustrated by it. Compare with Peggy, who’s not as stupid so much as arrogant and over confident.

She's uneducated trailer trash who got by on her looks.

She was actually fairly intelligent in the beginning. She knew how to rebuild Hank's truck and Hank's not the type of guy to let just anyone mess with his vehicle.

But in answer to your question, dim characters get flanderized to the point where they get so goddamn stupid it's not endearing, it's just sad.

>Like, putting two and two together is something even animals can do
you would be surprised how many actual people are less capable than literal animals. Our lifestyles have allowed for the atrophy of many mental functions. Luanne is the endgame of humanity.

That’s it- the Fladerization.

Look at Cosmo in Fairly Oddparents. Strongest example of this.

When you have these you don't need smarts

I feel Patrick Star is more flanderized. He went from being able to help spongebob cheat on the boating exam to being borderline catatonic in later seasons

Flanderization is interesting, because the only time I ever really see it comes up is when it's applying to a character that's had their stupidity upped 1000%. It's like a weird subset of the trope applying to this particular character trait; "Any designated 'dumb' character will inevitably be exaggerated to an unbelievable degree". Not Yas Forums related, but Joey from Friends is arguably the best (or worst) example period. How you take a street smart guy and turn him into one notch above a drooling nincompoop is beyond me.

She just is. If you take the mechanic stuff from a few episodes you can kind of see her as having an "idiot savant" thing going on there, except I don't think she actually has any sort of disorder or anything. She's just dumb and/or often doesn't come off that interested in actually learning/applying herself at school or anything.

That said, I think she ends up doing less stupid shit compared to a lot of the regular characters when you sort of look at the bigger picture. Like she has some of the dumbest lines, and yet she's able to hold down jobs and pay rent and generally function as an adult once she gets out of Hank's house. Comes off like the stuff she says is dumber than the way she actually gets by in her daily life.

She grew up in a broken trailer...so yeah, she learned to fix things, but yeah, she's still naïve

Fetal alcohol syndrome

I've seen it for other things; for example, if a sitcom has a wife character who's kind of snarky, $10 gets you $20 she'll turn into a shrieking harpy by the show's end.

Well sometimes you gotta kick a baby in the mouth and vomit.

>Why is Luanne so goddamn stupid?

stupid people achieve more and faster than people "who fight". she just came along with a social role assigned by her family and surroundings and grew into it perfectly in..

Show bibles are worth nothing, having more than two writers in a show eventually leads to flanderization as the guys only know how to write for traits.

It's all so tiresome.

Smart characters become reality-breaking inventors
Opportunistic characters become insanely greedy
Villains usually become frustratingly incompetent because they would have won otherwise
The best friend becomes a jack-of-all-trades because it's easier than writing a new character
The underappreciated character becomes a buttmonkey to the point that you hope it gets cancelled.
And obviously, the do-gooder character becomes an unbearable zealot.

I'll always be vaguely butthurt by the fact that she ended up with Lucky, who is equally stupid. I honestly feel sorry for their kid, thing's gonna grow up to be a nonfunctional mess.

Lucky had decent levels of emotional intelligence and developed some morals at least, it's not that fucked up.

This is probably the answer. About 5% of children born in the United States actually have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome but they just don't have the physical characteristics of the condition. Leanne's definitely an alcoholic, so it would be expected for Luanne to have suffered.

If King of the Hill ever comes back, they're going to have Luanne & Lucky die during the time skip. Both of their voice actors died during the hiatus & the best way to honor the departed is to kill off their characters in respect. I would say they died in a car crash. I do love the idea of Hank coming to terms with raising Gracie.

Peggy seemed stupider. I can take a slow character like Luanne, cosmo or homer. But good fucking god is Peggy just stupid.
>prints bulletin to mix ammonia and bleach
>doesn’t actually know Spanish and kidnaps a Mexican child
>doesn’t even know that hawks hunt fucking rabbits

Everybody is mental instution level of retardation when you think about it. Most of the plots wouldnt work otherwise.

But there is some realism to the stupidity. I had a girl in my gifted class in middle school who thought penguins were the best birds because they could both swim and fly.

Isn't the trope named after Ned Flanders? He went from a occasionally overbearing but still well-meaning Christian neighbor to a bastard religious zealot because they took the one negative aspect of his character and made it his sole defining trait.

I think a lot of Peg's stupider moments are less about sudden drops in IQ and more from her delusional amount of pride and self-importance over issues that she refuses to acknowledge that she actually has a problem with, and thus hurts her ability to ever grow in that area.

>I would say they died in a car crash.

I would say they died in an explosion...

...caused by a faulty propane tank.

>lived in a trailer her whole life
>mom and dad constantly fighting and shitty parents
>parents and extended family (Peggy) are also pretty dumb
Some people are just really dumb, I don't know why you find that so unbelievable.

Have you met a woman? They genuinely are that retarded

and yet you still cant get a girlfriend

The Christian part wasn't negative at the start, that's the sad part.

>bastard religious zealot
What has he done in the last decade?
I haven't watched zombie Simpsons
