Daria worked because the points she made, even if heavy handed, were ones we could all get behind or at least see the argument to. Personally I prefer this. How would you guys feel if you're watching a show with two great guy friends, and it ends with them suddenly becoming gay and taking each other to the bone zone? It would feel like an awkward character change. It's likely the same for women.

I grew to seriously love Helen over the course of the show. Jake continues, for the most part, to get played for laughs, but Helen gradually is depicted as a pretty decent mother, considering she's also a full-time lawyer. I love the moments in the show when she gives Daria excellent advice, to the shock of Daria herself.
