Spirou is a chad

I would say Tintin, but I'm not sure.
Lingue claire should be more mainstream.

Franquin.

Franquin is not quite Ligne Claire, it's an evolution called the Marcinelle school.

People will usually answer Franquin at first because he's the emblematic one, but the actual originator was Joseph Gillain AKA Jijé, the mentor of Franquin, Franquin, Morris and Will and the second Spirou artist, right before Franquin.

What's ligne claire, btw? I never understood the concept.

Sweet, thanks guys

ligne balls

Why did Spirou get less horny AFTER puberty?

simple unobtrusive linework without elaborate weight variation, hatching, etc. compare a tintin or blake et mortimer page to a lucky luke or asterix page, or to a the spirit page.

Got raped during one of his adventures and lost his lust for females

We don't know what he was like as a teenager. As an adult, I guess he simply matured quickly.

I want to know more about ligne claire as an style, where do I start? Who should I read?

Thanks

>the Marcinelle school
I've seen it also referred to as "Comic-Dynamic" (comic as in humorous, dynamic as in energetic).

As well as Ligne Claire there's also Realism, which broadly covers the three main styles present in Bande Dessiné.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bande_dessinée

another point I forgot is that it also tends towards sort of a realism- while the figures have cartoony expressions, they're still overall more realistic compared to a lot of the Marcinelle stuff. Compare early Spirou to later Spirou, Blake et Mortimer to Valerian et Laureline, etc etc. It feels more like pulp-era stuff.

The stealth implication by Tome & Janry in some Petit Spirou materials is that during his teenage years there eventually was a conflict with his friend Vertignasse over Suzette that ended their friendship and possibly resulted in Vertignasse embracing the criminal career towards which he was always predisposed, after which Spirou basically distanced himself from romance and/or sex.

However it's not particularly canonical and some other authors have their own versions, like for Emile bravo it's because he's staying faithful to his jewish girlfriend who died in the camps in WW2, for Tarrin it's because he's gay and in denial, for Fournier it's that he's just oblivious, for Féroumont it's that he's shy and old fashioned (also an interpretation used by Tome & Janry on occasions), etc.

The actual reason, of course, is that until the 70s characters in comics for kids in france usually just weren't allowed to have romantic relationships outside of marriage.

I read the recent revival of Ric Hochet the other day, despite not having read Ric Hochet as a kid. One of the first points they make is showing him having a sex life now, which maybe he already had before but it felt much more like "HA HA NOW IT'S THE 2000S WE CAN SAY HE FUCKS, RIC HOCHET FUCKS"

Should be noted that the works by the authors you mentioned besides Fournier and Tome/Janry are very much non canon and don’t carry any weight in the main series.

There's no main series anymore, the closest things are Emile bravo's WW2 version and Supergroom, a crappy attempt to cash in on superheroes' success.

Jijé was also said to influence Gir, when he began to draw Jerry Spring in a more realistic manner.

You telling me that the one where the Marsupilami returned was the final canon Spirou and Fantasio adventure? Because that sucks, if true.

Seeing the direction the Journal de Spirou took in the last years makes me pessimistic for both the series and periodical. It seems whoever is in charge at Dupuis nowadays wants to populate its pages mostly with comics aimed either at kids and young teens, or nostalgic boomers. It all feels very manufactured and soulless to me, and I always thought both Le Journal and the main series were at their best when they had chief editors that favored or at least allowed experimental stuff, like Delporte or Tinlot, or the first years of Niffle.

I mean, they got the fucking Minions and Secret Life of Pets in there. You can't really do more vapid and soulless that that crap, and it also happens to appeal to both dumb kids and dumb boomers.

>those black ones
marsupilami is a cuck

>old Franco-Belgian kids comic
>canon sexuality
Man the Americans don't know shit with the comics code. None of our fags were even allowed to have girlfriends or to be teased as having romantic interests. Sidekicks like Obelix or Haddock did but it was mostly played for comedy. That's why things like the Rose and the Glaive or Luna Fatale were so significant in material aimed at children, and unlocked shit like Petit Spirou and Titeuf.

As opposed to whom?

Marcinelle, suposedly.

Luna fatale was after petit spirou started, it's the other way round. That being said the first spirou girl characters were allowed to lust after was Fournier's Ororea

>There's no main series anymore
Can I get some clarification on this? Has the original Spirou & Fantasio series, which has been running since the fucking 1930's really been cancelled? Like, for real??
