Rewatching older episodes, it is still pretty clear they were a couple, at least in loose terms. The steady kid-ification of Spongebob is pretty different from the earlier seasons where it’s at the very least implied Sandy isn’t surprised to see him naked

That episode still bugs the hell out of me. Unless...is this supposed to piss on SpongeBob x Sandy shippers? If so, there's a lack of tongue-in-cheekiness that really makes this fall flat (which would be off brand for the show as well).

I remember reading a kids book about Spongebob with jokes and games and stuff. One of the pages had Spongebob giving romantic advice and had a joke along the lines of.
