I'm new to webcomics. I made character designs already and I have the main plot ready for the most part. But I don't know how to get started. I'm trying my hand at storyboarding but I can't come up with a way to start it. I feel like I really need strong first pages to get anyone interested enough to start/keep reading, but with world building and character introductions in the beginning it's already pretty boring.
Kevin Russell
eeeeEEEEEEEE there she is! It’s she! Thank you, Gus!!
I'm going to have a similar issue with my next comic - the beggining is way too linear. Maybe scramble things a bit or have the antagonists strike a move right at the start. That usually works for most stories.
Or make the character introductions really interesting, not just a name and a face.
Sounds like you know what to not do. That's great.
I love her.
Luke Scott
>Maybe scramble things a bit or have the antagonists strike a move right at the start My comic is about skateboarding so I'm not too sure if I can apply this idea here, but maybe I can try something else along these lines. >Or make the character introductions really interesting I wanna try this. Do you have any tips on how I can go about this, given that it's a more of a sol style comic?
Xavier Stewart
Question for the group, how long does it typically take you to do a page?
Dominic Green
>Question: How thoughtful are you about your panels: the number, the shape, the size, etc? I always have the same square and rectangular shaped panels. I might change it in my next story which I plan to do in an actual webcomic format.
Omnifighters takes place in a utopian world, in this world superpowered beings called Omnifighters and regular humans live together in a mostly peaceful society. Everything seems to be going well at first but as the story goes on more chaos starts emerging, will Wendy and her friends become victorious against all the looming threats?
>I wanna try this. Do you have any tips on how I can go about this, given that it's a more of a sol style comic? Give each character his own little story that joins them to the plot maybe. I remember doing that once and it made for very compelling characters, the reader gets to know a lot about them.
No need to follow that idea though, its just the one coming on my mind now.
if im energized I can do 3 pages a week. So 2-3 days.
Sounds like you're talking about the person under your post user
Jayden Martin
Jiminy crickets. It's taking me a while. Like maybe a week and a half to do one page. Maybe I'm subconsciously prolonging the process. I have to dial it up
Dominic King
Reposting this Gurk gijinka simply because I can! This is gonna be a good thread with a minimum of dramaposting!
>want story to be about transforming robot characters >but Transformers though Am I stupid for being worried about this? Hasbro doesn't own the concept of transforming robots, and there are plenty of instances that predate the series.
For context, all my characters are already robots, and they pilot mechs. But I like to be a efficient, so why not just have them BE the mechs.
I love that first panel with the silhouettes and the foreground.
I think I just need to get out of my own head. Because I'll obsess over small details that then become too time-consuming. Look at One Punch Man. The guy didn't care how his stuff looked, he just had a good sorry to tell and started plowing through pages. That's the kind of mentality I'd like to adopt.
The only big problem I can see with the art is the face being disproportionately large for the head.

That's the opposite extreme for me, and its very likely no one will read your comic if you go at it that way. One Punch Man is talked about so much precisely because its a weird exception. Also ONE is a master of humor and storytelling, so its easier for people to get interested, but we can never know if we are at that level ourselves.
I generally don't think its a good idea but you do your thing. I think the best is to give yourself clear deadlines and try your best while respecting them
I don't even have a ruler. I'm literally using fucking MS Paint

There’s a line tool for that, you know.
Aiden Powell
Fair point. I guess I just need to find a decent balance.
Chase Price
It's an old design by now. But I do appreciate the feedback. In more recent pages I did some redesigns and changed the facial proportion a bit of some characters.
Asher Davis
At least I can appreciate the determination of making one of these a day.

Eating out of the garbage...BAD?! You dont need that negativity, be more positive and just say YES!

My biggest pet peeve is starting a story with an info dump. Beginning with walls of text or world building stuff is a massive wall no one want to climb just to start a story. I always recommend that writers establish their status quo immediately. Show the reader exactly what to expect for the rest of the story. Then you allow the exposition and world building to devolope organically as the story progresses. Start with an inane conversation that has two characters interacting. no narrative, no build up or explanation. Just let the characters speak for themselves. Then go from there.
Mason Jenkins
>Start with an inane conversation that has two characters interacting. no narrative, no build up or explanation I see. I could try that.
Christian Mitchell
How do you guys go about dividing your plot into chapters? How many pages per chapter do you usually go for? What about overlying arks?
Luis Foster
I advise you to check out your favorite manga and comics first issue and see how they do it. Not every comic starts out great. Sandman is one example off the top of my head. The first issue isn't amazing and it takes about 7 issues until it becomes really good. It's the same with many of my favorite manga. The best thing to do is just start. Making excuses will just lead to procrastination. The only way to improve is to make pages and get better. If you have your characters and their backstories and personalities figured out they should be easy for you to write. All you have to do is put them in interesting situations. >I'm trying my hand at storyboarding but I can't come up with a way to start it. If you are struggling that much just try a simply 6 panel 2x3 grid of squares and go from there. You can even look at comic and manga layouts you like and copy them but inserting your characters and story instead. Whatever it takes to get you to start making pages, do it. Not every page or panel has to be perfect, it's all about the story. My favorite example is Hunter X Hunter. To me it is the greatest shonen manga ever, but there are a lot of panels and pages in there where Togashi just didn't even try and it looks like scribbles. It still sells 10 million copies and no one cares because the story and characters and writing are so good. JUST START, DO NOT LET YOUR DREAMS BE MEMES.
I also have an indiegogo running for it with 7 days left where you can buy physical copies of Oi. BANSHEE VALE CALLING will be the most dramatic and gutripping adventure the bards of Oi have gone through yet. >indiegogo.com/projects/oi-book-3-banshee-vale-calling/x/10567954#/
My story has two parts. PART 1: Is mostly set up for the execution that is part 2. Both parts have 10 chapters but part 2 is way longer, because back then on part 1 I impossed myself a limit of ten pages per chapter. No such limit exists on part two.
1. Unforgivable Sin 2. Massacre 3. Crossroads 4. The Priest These four chapters are the first "arc" per say, as they give us the protagonists and initial problem. Then 5. The Curse Of Douma 6. Assault At Fort Lumen 7. Shuten 8. Revelation 9. The Battle 10. Separation Those chapters act as the second story arc of part 2, they pose more questions and develop some characters. The last chapter completely breaks the story. Shuten vs Azu is the climatic showdown of the part, since I hyped Shuten a lot on the previous chapters.
For part 2 1. A Story Of Fire 2. Hunger 3. An Alliance 4. The Horde First storyarc of Rau turning good and dealing with the Priest. 5. Attacking The Capital 6. The Weeping Prince Second story arc, Azu goes to take over the capital. My favorite maybe. 7. Forgiveness This resolves the previous Rau storyarc and sets the story for the finale. 8. The Devouring Queen 9. I feel titles can be spoilery maybe? 10. I feel titles can definitely be spoilery. Those three act as the finale part one, two, and epilogue respectively.
I simply posted coldfusion's 'art' :) I also told Ben0 to delete my posts in there, because it was full of creepy toxic people who draw CP and hermaphrodite furry porn . Please stay on topic and keep the drama to a minimum :)
Cameron Morris
I make them self contained stories with their own beginning middle and end. There is an over arching plot that links them together, but I consider each chapter to be a stand alone episode. Instead of one huge story, it's 20 some short stories. So dividing them up isnt an issue. They stand on their own.
Angel Fisher
New page out today! Can't share it here cause it's nsfw so I guess you'll just *have* to come see it on tapas tapas.io/episode/1713415
Kevin Lewis
and yeah no beef between omeow and I, tho I still wonder why people call me Ben0, it's BenO lol
Caleb Wilson
Hey chochachos, ready for a mini storytime? I’ll post my entire comic again to save you some clicks! This is more of a threat than an offer! Good vibes in this thread!
>Ben0, it's BenO It's just easy to get those confused desu
Gabriel Johnson
Yep, BenO is a good bro. He agreed to delete my posts a few days before I left that discord voluntarily. You can DM him yourself if you dont believe me. I do not wish to be associated with many of the toxic creeps in there, or the 'art's that they make. That said, some of the people in that discord are good people. >if anyone has concerns about artists drawing CP, I will be happy to forward you the contact info for an anti-human trafficking charity I used to work for in college. The less CP drawing pedo freaks walking the streets, the better. Let us now try to remain on topic. Leave the discord drama to your discord channel :)
the truth is out there im just a messenger of god to deliver to all sinner
Isaac Hill
You are likely projecting. If you have concerns about artists drawing CP in your discord, please forward it to local authorities. Judges and local police departments tend to have no sympathy for cp artists from what I saw working at the anti-human trafficking charity back in the day. Artists who draw CP tend to have loads of illegal shit on their harddrive and local police are generally all too happy to raid and get them locked up. Now keep your silly discord drama for your discord. If wish for me to forward information on to my contacts at the charity, just let me know via discord. The less pedo freaks walking the streets, the better
