Chapter 76: Down That Road
A new chapter!
--------------------------
Instead of a retrospective video this week, I thought it might be nice to have an extra comic to read, so I put the side comic COYOTE online! It was originally meant to be print-only, but I thought it would be fun to have more comics to read during these times, so here it is!
Don't worry though, we'll be doing a retrospective video about it soon!
Gunnerkrigg Court
down what road
Man, Annie's makeup made her look like a clown.
is this a flashback chapter?
We really are approaching the ending, huh.
Or the point where the ending would be if this wasn't Siddell's day job.

>Kid Anne
Hey, remember when Annie used to have a personality? I hate when the character only traits are flaws that eventually disappear through character development.
Their heads do look more... football like in the title page.
Is Coyote a Garry Stu?
If he ends the comic, I'm sure he'll make his way to the GC pilot.
They're also wearing the old sweaters.
Happy belated 15th anniversary!
What was your favorite moment from the comic?
Looks like it.
I remember Antimony being prim, proper, reserved, and stilted, and all of that being a lid on a bubbling inferno of bitterness and wrath. I miss that Annie.
This title page makes me nostalgic.
No. One of the biggest traits for a Gary/Mary Sue is being liked by basically everyone. Coyote isn't liked, he's tolerated by most of the cast due to being impossible to ignore.
>It was originally meant to be print-only
Literally why?
I mean, if he wanted it that way for profits, he should've at least said it wouldn't be online at all! But even that seems like a stupid move
He's either loved or feared, a Gary Stu trait
He's also a literal god in setting, disqualifying him full stop.
i liked it when zimmy was in the comic
I feel like someone smarter than me needs to analyze Gunnerkrigg Court and figure out where it went wrong. I know in my gut that it's not as good as it used to be, but I'm having trouble articulating why.
I think the pacing just isn't good and the story meanders too much.
I guess "pacing" is one way of putting it.
As best as I can articulate it, my biggest complaint with modern GC is that there are a lot of things that I thought were going to be a big deal earlier in the comic which have been dealt with in a very low-key, boring way. It feels like the comic has gone out of its way to avoid grand theater and dramatic moments, even in instances where that's exactly what should have happened.
The biggest culprit is everything involving Tony. Tony has been wasted since his reintroduction, IMO. I didn't expect him to reappear in the comic until the climax. I thought Annie's issues with her father were going to be some huge plot point that would lead to tons of psychodrama. Something grand and operatic. Instead, Tony is dealt with in a very low-stakes, boring way. It's a waste of the buildup that surrounded him. And that's precisely the thing I don't like about modern Gunnerkrigg: it's taking all these things that were built up earlier in the comic and dealing with them in rather mundane, boring ways. These are things we have, in many cases, been anticipating for chapters and chapters, years and years. You have to give them their due. Tony's the biggest example, but he's not the only one. You've got to have some fucking fireworks, rather than dealing with things in a mundane way.
Also I think the art has degraded, but that's another issue entirely.
i think its fun
i don't know why you guys like to be so down on it
The lesson here is to be kind to ants.
>Also I think the art has degraded, but that's another issue entirely.
So, going by what Tom's art looked like circa the start of the comic, and how it's progressed from then to now, and shit like the title page just posted, I think the changing art is entirely intentional.
I do like the thick outline cartoony style more, though.
I really appreciate that everything doesn't become some bombastic bullshit that means the stakes have to keep getting higher like it was world of warcraft.
So i just read Coyote!
I liked it. felt like it was pushing a lot of time into just a short span, though.
Like, i scarcely believe Renard and Ysengrin went to the Court with Coyote on the very same day they met him
But overall, i think it was alright. Hope Tom will release another comic soon
he's making a zimmy one
This is about what I expected in a Coyote origin story. It's funny how he's so obsessed with being the best, but admires Rey so much for just chillin. Havin a laugh. That's REAL big dick energy right there. Also, he cute.
Is that true or are you the deranged Zimmyfag? Or is it both?
In the videos he's always talking about wanting to do the story where Zimmy and Gamma meet and also more Jones stories.
both
>Nobody recognised her
Wait... he talks about -wanting to make them-?
Cause that sounds like he hasn't even started on it
Did Tom make a typo on page 21 or is 'trail' some kind of special meaning?
They're old videos.
The pacing has literally never changed
You just think it's bad "now" because "now" is "after I read it all at once like it's meant to be read"
Sometimes you just grow tired of a comic. Even when it maybe shouldn't, context matters. A story can be just as good as it ever was, but you're probably going to feel different about that next page if instead of just the latest in a handful you've started reading it's the thousandth after following it for a decade.
Personally, Gunnerkrigg Court has ups and downs for me, but usually a funny or moving or plot-twisty page will come out and restore that old feeling of enjoyment and engagement again. "Coyote" actually just did that for me.
>You enjoy playing with ants, too?
>Ants?
It's structured like a myth, so that's how things work out. You meet a guy and then are immediately on to do the important thing with them.
It's interesting to see that the Coyote we know, his powers and looks, are all from Coyote learning what's special about other dogs and just willing himself to have that but better. The story then ends on him not being able to do that with Reynard, because what's special about Reynard is who he is and what he wants, not any easy to ape trait. It feels like the genesis of Coyote's plot to become Lupe: Coyote can do anything except not be himself. And be satisfied with not being able to do something.
Kat's ugly nose!
don't say that please
Kat a cute!
CUTE!!!
>down that road
So, "how Annie made me gay" chapter?
This is gonna be a flashback chapter isnt it
Kat looks very silly in this!
That one!
Hey Faggots,
My name is Kat, and I hate every single one of you. All of you are fat, retarded, no-lifes who spend every second of their day looking at stupid imaa pictures. You are everything bad in the court. Honestly, have any of you ever gotten any robot cult in your name? I mean, I guess it's fun making fun of people because of your own insecurities, but you all take to a whole new level. This is even worse than jerking off to pictures of boxbot.
Don't be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I'm pretty much perfect. I made an antigravity scooter in 2 hours with my garage scraps and started the robot bioevolution revolution. What technology did you master, other than "jack off to naked magical forest creatures"? I also get straight A's, and have a banging hot girlfriend (She just alt-reality-cloned herself; Shit was SO Scientific). You are all faggots who should just kill yourselves. Thanks for listening.
I dislike Coyote more than ever now ...
Hah, look at this dyke thinking I would ever be her girlfriend!
My sister and I are only into MEN with big strong COCKS who can get us pregnant! We'd never be interested in girls.
We're not friends anymore!
Go and be a freak somewhere else with that psycho Paz!
Renard is the only one of these retarded dogs who doesn't act like a 13 year old
And even Renard is really pushing it, with that 'I call them humans' line.
All of these stupid dogs deserve to get rekt by Kat.
What you're describing you expected sounds like an anime.
Maybe gunnerkrigg's just not your genre?
-All of the interesting things about it have been pounded into something more generic. For example, all of the interesting things about Annie's character are gone.
-There aren't any real dramatic beats anymore. Tom just mechanically glides through the comic.
-The characters aren't allowed to feel anything or guide the plot themselves. Remember when Annie had a huge fight with Rey and found out her birth is what killed her mother and she left the Court for a whole summer and then there was an entire chapter dedicated to her trying to make up with Kat? Tom doesn't give enough of a fuck anymore to tell a story that good and that emotional and that driven by character anymore.

Webcomics as a medium have gradually been fading in prominence since the internet became more widespread in use. Back when Gunnerkrigg started, webcomics were probably one of the most popular forms of media on the internet. Nowadays I think that the number of people who remember those days are an increasingly small minority. There are still popular webcomics, but they're not nearly as omnipresent in internet discussion like they used to be. In 2007 or so practically everyone online recognized Gunnerkrigg whether they loved it or hated it, today it's a small minority.
