I agree Kanaya, Jane and Jade's mind control just brought their negative emotions and feelings to the forefront rather than outright compelled them to act in a certain matter. It would've been interesting seeing the characters come to terms with these emotions and see if they embrace or reject them.

He is COMPLETELY mindcontrolled. Or maybe not. See that's the constant theme that Gamzee always had. Remember that he was sawed in half at one point, in Caliborn's masterpiece, making only HALF of him be a part of Lord English. He always had this theme of comedy/tragedy, being a friendly clown/being an instrument of a time demon's will. The fact that you can not tell at ANY given point if he is being mindcontrolled, or if he's doing everything of his own will.
Like when Aranea mindcontrolled him. Like when Terezi stabbed him and he went nuclear. Like when he broke down on his knees crying for Equius' rebirth.
If you look at his classpect this is only furthered even more. Rage stands for CODE. An inner set of LAWS that you base your entire worldview around. IF that code is broken or slighted by someone, heroes of Rage become on par with Hope players as far as raw power goes. Gamzee's inner code is tied to the Cherubs, specifically Caliborn and what he wants.
He's also a Bard. Bard's like Princes, destroy their aspect, except Bards do it 'passively'.
So what I'm trying to say is, even though it is intentionally confusing, I think that there is a genuine lost kid inside Gamzee. And his mistreatment by the narrative is purposeful. Just like how he was treated VERY positively by the narrative back in the old Canon (remember when his moirallegaince with Karkat was described as fucking perfect or some shit? and then he immatiely broke it off?.), him being mistreated in the HS2 is also related to the cherubs.
He is slowly destroying his own code. He's trapped being himself, having brainrot and a fucked up pathological problem, much the same way Equius does. But I think he's trying. I think he's trying to break free. Don't give in yet.
