Priest wrote Dick like a massive idiot in his Lazarus Contract story. It is all we have to go on and it was pretty bad. Priest also seems to prefer writing dark and damaged characters and he'd probably struggle writing someone like Dick who is well adjusted.

To be fair everything was dumb about Lazarus Contract.
Like people were mad at Dick that he trained Rose to be a good person in exchange for Slade not killing all of them (and Dick not telling them about that) and Damian was framed at right for some reason.

DC (aka Dido) also rejected a Mark Waid Nightwing run, and he repurposed parts of it for his Daredevil a few years later.

Black Mirror was one of the best batman stories I've ever read. Pretty sure court of owls was supposed to be Dickbats as well before the reboot happened.

Dick grew up in a circus and was child performer and was put in crazy situations before even meeting Bruce. I don't think Priest's idea of Dick having problems or hating Bruce because he put him in dangerous situations as a child works because of Dick's background.

He also said he wanted to write a story similar to one Mark Waid wrote about how Batman had plans to take out the Justice League if they were to turn evil. He said he'd want to do a Nightwing vs Batman arc similar to how he did on Deathstroke and he said he would like to create a new home city for Dick instead of Gotham. He was really mad his pitch got rejected and said that if DC doesn't want him to fix Dick Grayson then he isn't going to beg.

Kinda easy to be the nice guy when Tims nonexistent and Jason is competing with Damien to see who's more EXTREME. Dick's always been the "better man, not as good Batman" in the Batfam, Tim's the better detective, Cass is the better fighter, Jason is the outsider and Damien the "edgelord with a heart of gold." If you can't work a Nightwing run around being the handsome, charismatic heir apparent older brother to a dynasty of Cape shenanigans then maybe SuperHero books arn't for you.
