Even where prostitution is legal there are always complicated rules separating what's acceptable behavior in private and professionally with prostitution always ending up on the low end of the social spectrum. Take ancient Rome for example, there are multiple instances of high class Romans fetishizing prostitution precisely because it's a social taboo and facing repercussions (sometimes lethal) for indulging themselves.

No, prostitutes can file taxes, go to church, be active and engaging members of their community. Are prostitutes (male or female) actively sought after romantic or political partners? Of course not. Promiscuity in general still carries with it a host of negative health (both mental and physical) and economic affects, while we can engage in a "chicken or egg" discussion about whether the unhealthy mental, physical and economic situation leads to the promiscuity and vice versa the fact remains that attaching profit to promiscuity does little to nothing to lessen the negative connotations. There's something biological in the human animal looking at breeding and the instincts connected with it that mirrors very real stigma attached to the act and profession that crosses time and culture.

Even high class prostitutes in ancient rome were required to wear colors or jewelry denoting their profession so that they couldn't be mistaken for women of class and breeding. Going so far as for unmarried ex-prostitutes who had attained enough wealth being required to wear a linked chain necklace (even small links of copper or silver or gold, a chain none the less) to denote how they had achieved their wealth, so that any potential mate couldn't be tricked into marrying one.
