Virtue signalling is a suitable replacement for morality so as long as someone holds the right beliefs they can be a good person whether they steal shit or not. Combine that with the fact that the absolute worst thing in the world you can be is a square, so anyone saying that you shouldn't steal are in fact the worst people.

There has to be a certain amount of self awareness in shoplifters knowing that what they’re doing is wrong, otherwise they won’t get the same rush. In the case in the comic it’s not even about wanting the items as much as it’s the thrill of breaking a rule or taboo. It comes from the same place as sexual deviants who get off on shitting their pants because they know they should be ashamed of doing it.

I don't see it as the author excusing the action at all. I knew so many fucking 15-25 year old art girls that were total kleptomaniacs, and art supplies, were just a popular thing to steal along with makeup and snacks. I just took it as making fun of people like that.

It also costs the musician less to just pirate the music. If you burn music onto disks and give them to friends then the music store can still sell its copies and the musician can still make a profit. If you just walk into the store and steal them, then both the store and musician suffer a loss as a result.
That's the fundamental cause-and-effect difference between piracy and theft.
I think the comic's artist tried to pull the whole "well you guys pirate stuff" excuse too.

That’s what I would think if the shoplifting comic existed in a bubble completely divorced from the artist. But knowing that the artist also drew this, I think they just unironically support stealing, and makes these comics in what’s meant to be a relatable semi-autobiographical style.

Probably true. Pirating does not directly hurt the amount of physical product the stores and musician sell, and it spreads knowledge/appreciation of the artist basically for free.
A lot of people will buy albums for music they previously pirated just for the sake of having a physical copy and/or supporting the artist.
