This was fascinating.

Rightfully so, the shock collar plot would have been leagues better, not because "OMG SO DARK" but because it'd have a narrative that both makes sense for, and is built around animals being, well animals, instead of the retarded "whites vs blacks/girl power" shit we got in the end.

Regardless of which version they went with the story doesn't work. The central theme of both ideas is multiculturalism. And that shit doesn't work, it's pure propaganda by the bastards at Disney.

And yet Disney's Frozen merch wasn't looking too good last I checked, a few months ago at my store Frozen 2 merch wasn't selling at all. It was just.. there.

I'm not surprised. I found it to be mediocre, with the only memorable thing being the message, but i feel that even that wasn't done great. Way too on the nose for me.

I just don't get why they cast Jason Bateman to voice Nick.

I get it, Bateman's a big name thanks to arrested development, he plays a good 'relatable everyman' character who regularly faces misfortune and struggles to keep his world stable.

But after hearing everyone freaking out about the characters and the personalities and the perfect slice-of-life social dynamics of Zootopia, I decided to finally check it out, and holy shit does Bateman sound like he's phoning it in. Like, it's distracting seeing Nick gesturing and emoting exaggeratedly, being a cartoon and all, yet hearing Bateman's monotone and nearly-emotionless mumbling. Bateman is not a character actor, he best plays himself - a relatable average guy, in whatever he appears. His strength is in his body language, the timing of his facial and dialogue delivery, and his improvisational humor. When he's just sitting in a booth reading a script and trying to time delivery for virtual events he's witnessing remotely on a screen, he's severely out of his element, and it shows.

His weak, casual delivery of lines and his "background noise" voice do NOT suit the character of Nick at all. It almost takes something away from the movie, like you'd get a better end-product just watching it on mute with subtitles, and appreciating the liveliness and emotion in the animation alone.

At least it wasn't as bad as the dystopian take "torturing and persecution is bad, white people!"

Byron picked him because he usually played conmans. Ginnifer or whatshername was also a second thought, she was supposed to be more of a side character, orbiting around Nick.

I really liked this movie the first time I watched it. But watching it recently, my opinion of it has lowered significantly. It is basically the cartoon equivalent of Crash. The hamfisted contradictory message overpowers the story constantly and takes you out of the movie. But it at least does have some redeeming qualities unlike Crash. I like Nick and Judy's relationship. It's visually gorgeous. There are some clever bits of dialogue, even if the script is often insufferably on-the-nose.

Still better than Frozen but far from top tier.
