>Filing off all of the signature edge to make a generic family-friendly kids movie, lacking all of the charm of the original games
>Changing Ratchet's motivation into being all about the galactic rangers
>Removing much of Clank's subplot, including meeting his mother
>Downplaying Captain Quark's betrayal to take advantage of his heel-face turn in the later games
>Similarly, giving Drek the boot and shoehorning in Dr Nefarious at the last minute as the movie's villain

everything that possibly could go wrong
goblin nefarious's design was nice though

Is it true that people initially hated Ratchet's characterization from the first game, but then preferred it when the movie changed it?

It's an animated movie based on a video game, that's what went wrong.

Absolutely everything. What a dissapointment

Insomniac writers felt Ratchet in the original was too much of a cunt throughout the most of it, so they softened him a bit to make his friendship with Clank more believable and gave him a newer VA

This. Even then, Ratchet's personality in the games from GC onward were nowhere near as soft and inoffensive as the movie and 2016 tie-in game were.

Overshadowed by the game itself... Also, the game had the movie cutscenes, too.

They replaced the anti-capitalist satire with a generic story about being a hero. Ratchet and Clank's character arcs were removed to give Qwark more to do. Forcing Dr. Nefarious as a main antagonist instead of building him up.

The tie-in game was so much better than the movie and even then it was held back by it.

The hollywood machine took control and rewrote the script to fill it with generic formulaic kids movie cliches that they consider more profitable. TJ wrote the original draft but left due to """creative differences""". I'm not even the biggest fan of the direction he took the series but at the very least he had a clear vision and unique style.

It made sense after the first game, with Ratchet finally cooling down and accepting Clank as a true friend.

They gave it to the hack behind the CGI TMNT movie.

Also all of the new character designs were ugly, half of them were just humans with a different skin color. They look like they were made by one of those discount bin no-name animation studios (which is exactly what they were)

Made a teen rated game a g rated movie

Giving drek pupils I can understand for the sake of making him more expressive, but they could have given him pupils and kept the glowy green eyes. Giving the blarg (and even victor) regular white eyes just screams "we need to make these characters non-threatening so they don't scare children", it's absolutely soulless

After replaying the first not too long ago, he really was a dick to clank once qwark betrayed them, he was pretty vicious to him. But that's what made his turn around so much better.
wow these are bad

God, this movie was so fucking bad, I fell asleep during it. Only other movie I did that with was Thor

Too safe and formulaic writing, castrated villain, Ratchet is such a goody 2 shoes smiling all the time, that I want to punch his smiley face.

From what I can tell, a vocal minority of roughly 10 people complained to Insomniac after being triggered in 2002, Insomniac thought the fans have spoken.

My thoughts exactly.

Ratchet is 15 in the first game. The movie takes in current year as opposed to 2002. Get over yourselves, Zombers. Ratchet is perfectly fine.

TheGamingBrit cums and buys a Pixelizer

Drek always sucked and adding in Dr. Nefarious was for the best.

Nice work.

>shirt
>shoes
There's your problem.

video game movie
series not popular anymore
made waaaaaaay too late

>series not popular anymore
Ratchet is more popular today than he was in 2002. Fact.

The movie sucked, the game was meh... no where near as good as the original game

This video gives a pretty good explanation as to why...

NO SERVICE

That was obligatory post. But so is this:

The games are still plenty popular. The 2016 remake was the highest and fastest selling game Insomniac had ever done up until Spidey.

The game did not sell well in a vacuum. You need to remember that:
>there were very few exclusives at the time
>people were promised a better remake of the original game which was already beloved

Yeah, Ratchet was a bit of a dick that mellowed from 2 onward but they took whatever bite he had left and neutered it for the movie.

>The game did not sell well in a vacuum.
That's exactly what it did.

Did it bug anyone else how downplayed the action was in the movie? Ratchet was incompetent with weapons for most of the film despite that being the focal point of the entire series, most of the fights were against robots (as opposed to blarg soldiers or any organic enemies), and even in battles featuring robots there wasn't any of the satisfying destruction physics like the games had. No metal cassings getting splayed open by blaster fire, no flying of sparks or gears or bolts, just robots limply toppling over.

Remember, we can't have any actual shoot-outs or intense action. It'll scare the kiddies.

>Please form an opinion for me, because I'm to stupid to make my own criticism.

There are lots of aspects of the movie that can be summed up as "we can't do X because think of the children"

No, it's more
>I don't have an actual conversation starter but I want to talk about [X] anyways so I'm going to use this phrase epic Yas Forums memers always say and leave it at that

Why is it that people only cared about "muh anti-capitalist satire" after gaming brit put that video out?

Well, not that many, really. A few braindead fanboys who repeat what their favourite e-celebs state, and a lot more who got reminded by said e-celeb of something that is actually in the game. I mean, it may not be "the ThEMe of the game", but shitting on consoomers and corporations has been there since Spyro 2, with Moneybags. And please tell me you played Spyro 2.

FUCK
SPOONFEEDERS

Those are only reasons why people who were really into the first game would care. Vast majority of people in the world haven't played any Ratchet and Clank let alone the first one. Thus they wouldn't give a flying fuck that it wasn't faithful to the game. Anyone that would care about that was pretty much guaranteed to see it no matter what. The Sonic movie didn't need to appeal to Sonic fans because they were all 100% going to pay to see it no matter what, even if they knew it wouldn't be good. It's the people that didn't give a shit about the games that needed to be sold, and they weren't. It's lack of faithfulness has absolutely nothing to do with its failure.

If it were more faithful it would've stood out and been more interesting, thus gaining attention from general audiences. Keep up user.

If the original game had the plot of the movie, the fans wouldn't complain and the movie would have been equally as unsuccessful.

The director or whatever changed it after Fixman wrote the script, which from little information can be gleamed from his comments on the subject, was more faithful to the games than the movie we got. Then of course you had celebrity cameos out the butthole. I can only imagine there being a push to make Ratchet, Clank, and Qwark all be voiced by big name actors as well, with Sony or Insomniac probably insisting that they stay the same just to give the film some fighting chance.

At least the game was alright. Should have included all of the worlds, but at least it felt like a Ratchet & Clank game even if it wasn't quite as good as the ones before it.

Maybe, maybe not. The first Silent Hill movie did pretty well, despite only following the core premise of the original game: a parent searching for their child in the titular town. Yet as anybody who has seen the movie and knows about the game it was based on was about, the film is only like 20% faithful. The extremely sexist decision to genderswap the main character into a woman, changing the name of the daughter even though Cheryl is a known name in the states, and radically changing the reason for Alessa being burned (and making her essentially the anti-Christ) were all such hard deviations for most fans of the series to handle. For a lot of people, the things that saved the film were its reuse of the OST (even if many instances were just kind of shoehorned in), the use of practical effects for the monsters when most other films were already going full CGI by that point, and managing to create an interesting backstory despite how different it was to the game's.
Then the sequel rolled around and took a shit all over that.

Yeah but I guess I never picked up on it being there because it doesn't really matter. That and moneybags is more of just a greedy douche rather than some biting satire

Unpopular Opinion:

Nothing was particularly wrong with this movie and it was perfectly fine adaptation, though it wasn't particularly incredible it was still a decent watch. The reason it bombed critically and financially was because the studio didn't do any marketing and put it up against TWO different Disney films.

Eh, it might not have been offensively bad, but it was pretty lame how it squanders so much plot potential. It could have easily have stayed more true to the original game while weaving into elements from the later games. Heck, all they had to do was just keep Nefarious as a henchman who develops a grudge against the heroes and swears revenge after either getting beat by them, or betrayed by Drek.

Attached: Nefarious frozen.png (632x480, 322.39K)

I will admit, I think it was pretty lame how Drek got his big moment stolen by Nefarious just because Insomniac liked him more. The big reveal about how he didn't give a damn about his own people and the whole thing was just one big scam was fantastic, I loved how sickeningly malicious he was.

It's a minor complaint IMO, but then again, even a few minor improvements probably would've helped out the movie a lot.

I don't know if that was Insomniac's doing, given they were pretty just stuck making the game tie-in. I'd love to see what the original script was like, even just a cliffnotes version that highlights the changes in the plot. We know the director made a lot of changes, so I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted Nefarious to have more prominence because of his recurrence in the games (which at least had breaks in between his multiple appearances). But yea, as the movie and game handle it, it just feels like a massive "fuck you" to anybody who liked Drek, and just wanting to get to the more memorable villain of the franchise right away.

Rainmaker is hardly no-name, they used to be Mainframe, the people who gave us ReBoot. Though with that said, they're a shadow of their former selves, not having anywhere near the talent or passion they possessed back in the 90s and early 00s

At least you got the real voices.
In France, Ratchet was dubbed by a fucking youtuber of all things, when the guy that voiced him since the first game ad to settle with the videogame.

They're no-name in the theatrical world. Their filmography consists of like 50 direct-to-video barbie movies and occasionally other random IPs. They're like the go-to shovelware contractor for IPs that want a movie.
The only real big names in theatrical animation are disney/pixar, dreamworks, illumination and blue sky.

I pretty much write this in every R&C the movie thread, but here we go.

>Changing Ratchet from an asshole with the hero role thrown upon him into a wide eyed idealist who wants to be a hero
>Clank's personality is just about the same but he barely gets any screen time
>"Ratchet and Clank" the movie is about 90% a Captain Qwark movie
>movie feels like it doesn't have high stakes, they keep saying Drek and Nefarious can destroy planets, but the one time they do it and the heroes fail "everyone was evacuated"

They took the first game, softened it, and made everything in it cliche

this movie dragged along other ps2 franchise

Is that animated series still happening?
