I think that started because CN was airing Total Drama Island and they left it untouched. That show was a hit, so they tried to get more TV-PG shows out there.

It even extended to the DC cartoons. Young Justice, Green Lantern, and Beware the Batan got away with more than usual because of the new rating (barring WB's gun censorship of the last one), but even the TV-Y7 Brave and the Bold felt edgy at times.

I remember Adventure Time was pretty edgy for a cartoon network show, a lot of innuendos and weirdly graphic violence.
One of my friends said it was going to be moved to Adult Swim but that never happened.

Because they're idiots who let their feelings and the mass opinion dictate their own opinions. So, those words don't make them "feel" anything, therefore they're not "bad".

They ended up having to cut the Birds Of Prey musical number because it was too raunchy but that show was way more subtle about hiding anything "TV-PG" from the network.
