Which are your Sword & Sorcery/Fantasy comics and animated series?

Lots of fantasy is racist, Conan and LOTR are racist.
The important thing is not to excuse these elements, or pretend they weren't a product of bad writing and the lazy application of tropes without deeper thought about their origin, while also taking the work by its own merit and enjoying it for what it is. I've sat in a room with ten or twenty of the most anti-racist people in the world listening to Conan audiobooks and laughing when REH talks about the "hook-nosed sons of Shem". The ignorance is funny and the shift from great-quality pulp to that kind of shortcutting is jarring, and that's also funny.

I've read a few issues of Red Sonja, but I mostly enjoy it for the art. I haven't seen the 80s movie yet.
Ryder Perry
Would Dawn count?
Carter Evans
Don't. Watch the first Conan movie and the Solomon Kane movie and then touch nothing else adapted from REH until further notice.
Kevin Morris
2002 He-Man and the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon from the 80's.

That's too bad. I was looking forward to this, but Rose Mcgowan has hit the wall hard, and it'd probably be too tamed and toned down in today's climate. Amber Heard would look good in a metal bikini, but she's nuked her career hard. I doubt we'll ever see a good adaption.
Joseph Sanders
That fanposter is like 10 years old. Rodriguez was too involved with Weinstein to ever get any female-lead movie again, and McGowan was front and center against that shit.
They took the Red Sonja movie off Bryan Singer recently and gave it to someone without any rape accusations who makes character dramas, so I'm optimistic about the potential it has.
For my money, I always preferred Sonja's original costume to the metal bikini, so I don't mind if it gets changed.

Feel like presenting a counter-point, or are you just against thinking about things?

Reflexivly calling something "racist" because it doesn't meet your Twitter sensibilities isn't thinking.

I take it you haven't read either LOTR or Howard's Conan, because there's some pretty obviously racist shit in both.
My point was while these things should be acknowledged, you shouldn't let them take away enjoyment of the products as a whole. So I think it was you who had the knee-jerk reaction, where you got assblasted over anyone talking about racism because you've trained yourself to get in internet arguments defending anything "problematic" without thought just because you've set yourself in opposition to people who usually complain about such things.
So not only have you neither read or comprehended those great works of literature, you're also too dumb to read my paragraph and a half Yas Forums post. So why are you talking like you have a clue what you're talking about?
Lucas Nelson
It's a shame we've never got a comic series with the artstyle of the old He-Man children's books. Those were the same best thing to come out of the franchise after Langella Skeletor.
Anyway, Savage Sword of Conan is my favorite S&S comic.
Christopher Scott
How is LOTR racist, and why is racism "bad writing"?
Joshua Taylor
>In a private letter, Tolkien describes orcs as: squat, broad, flat-nosed, sallow-skinned, with wide mouths and slant eyes: in fact degraded and repulsive versions of the (to Europeans) least lovely Mongol-types."
It's bad writing because it's using stereotypes and general points of ignorance as a shortcut to character building. Whenever Tolkien wants a horde, he uses monghols, whenever Howard wants a wizard, he uses a Jew, when he wants someone more barbaric than Conan, they're black. Hell, his Picts are Native American, for fuck's sake, he couldn't be bothered reading or researching about a location and time he clearly has a great passion for (prehistoric Britain and Ireland) because he had a prejudice he found easier to model the characters on.
Racism is laziness with regards to critical thinking about individuals as opposed to preconceived group stereotype, applying that laziness to the craft of writing is bad writing.

Don't the dark-skinned races of men automatically align with Sauron for no reason?
Ayden Hill
Anyone remember Conan the Adventurer from the 90s?
Jordan Murphy
you're an idiot
William Nguyen
I just want to add a PS here that I'm not "outing" Tolkien or Howard's racism or anything. All of this stuff is pretty heavily documented by people who've been doing this shit for a long time. If anons could into subtext better and not jump down the throat of anyone who says the word "racist", even if it's followed with "but don't let that take away from great work", this thread could've continued unhindered instead of a pissing match that ends when I have to bring up old, tired, academic points.
That Tolkien and Howard have elements of racism in their work is a given. I dunno if there's just a contingent of pewdiepie fans on Yas Forums who are just ready to whiteknight anyone who gets called racist or what, but give it a break, this argument is long settled and you're wrong.
Can we get back to the Sword and Sorcery thread now?
Owen Carter
And in another letter he praised the Jewish peoples and told the Nazi's to go fuck themselves. You are an idiot so just stop talking
Anthony Williams
>he said good things about one race so that absolves everything
Can you actually form critical thoughts? Can you understand nuance to anything? You're not going to learn how in a fucking D&D thread on Yas Forums, so please stop embarrassing yourself and go put the work in to become a more rounded thinker.
Hudson Turner
the irony of your post is highly amusing. please continue so the laughs carry on

Since this thread has descended into a discussion of the merits of "wokeness" in fantasy, if anons would like, I'll storytime the first issue of Rat Queens, a quote-unquote "woke" fantasy comic I've long been recommended, but have yet to actually read.
Jace Brown
Go for it.

I don't have a Plus account, so we're doing this oldschool. Patience would be appreciated.
Also, this is an Image comic so these creators ain't making Big Two money off this. If you like it, please support the official release.

It was at this point during the first action scene that I realized I have initial good feelings towards all the protags except the redhead, who I don't think the work has been put into enough yet.

Next time on Rat Queens!
Well, I had fun. I'll probably be checking out the rest of this series, and I hope if nothing else it continues to show, whichever side of the "wokeness" argument you fall on, that political correctness doesn't mean the sacrificing of humour, violence or sex appeal.
Thanks for your time, anons. Keep safe and wash your hands!

Dude, we had the peacemaking storytime. Leave it. Talk about something else.

Sorry user, just came into the thread and hadn't read past that post at the moment I replied.
