>"I know that the studio had really high expectations for the movie — as we all did. There were also undo expectations on a female-led movie, and what I was most disappointed in was this idea that perhaps it proved that we weren’t ready for this yet," Yan tells The Hollywood Reporter. "That was an extra burden that, as a woman-of-color director, I already had on me anyway. So, yes, I think there were certainly different ways you could interpret the success or lack of success of the movie, and everyone has a right to do that. But, I definitely do feel that everyone was pretty quick to jump on a certain angle."
Birds of Prey: Why did it underpreform?
>sexy Harley Quinn? Big draw
>Sexy Margot Robbie? Big draw
>"let's go woke and make her NOT sexy!"
WHY THE FUCK DO YOU THINK??!
>There were also undo expectations on a female-led movie,
>WAAAAAAAH THE MOVIE DID BACK BECAUSE WOMEN!
I am so fucking sick of this nonsense. It's a shitty, and frankly childish, excuse as to why people didn't like your shitty movie. Newsflash; some of the most iconic movies have had female leads.
>Terminator
>Kill Bill
>Alien
Pathetic. See its this kind of shit that actually sets women back 20-30 years
A shit movie is a shit movie, it doesn't matter what the gender of the actors is.
...
Maybe make a movie that respects the source material next time.
You know, I just realized that I would read the shit out of a Kill Bill comic. When should it be set? Before or after the movies?
Harley Quinn is fucking annoying and it stuns me that nobody realizes this.
Birds of Prey would have been successful if they had cast attractive white women, dressed them in sexy costumes, and didn't push the retarded "men are evil" bullshit. That's literally all they had to do and they'd make a ton of money.
>Harley Quinn, the breakout antihero
This is the problem. Harley Quinn is not an antihero. She straight up murders a guy at the start of the film. She breaks someone's knees because he was creeping on her. She blows up a factory killing God knows how many innocent employees. That's not anti-hero, that's villain.
And long stretches of the film were really hard to look at, color-wise.
>You know, I just realized that I would read the shit out of a Kill Bill comic. When should it be set? Before or after the movies?
Me too, and to answer your question, either could work. Beatrix had a long career as an assassin prior to the movies, and there's a lot you could do in the fallout of Bill's death.
You know I once came up with a character that pays homage/parodies Beatrix Kiddo for Marvel, she would obviously be a foe of Beta Ray Bill
>You know I once came up with a character that pays homage/parodies Beatrix Kiddo for Marvel, she would obviously be a foe of Beta Ray Bill
Not what I was expecting but okay. I would read it.
Ok clownfucker
I have heard the movie is decent, but the trailers were really bad.
What are you talking about? They intentionally made her unattractive.
>I think the movie is very much a story about female representation and the female experience.
Like breaking guy's knees and blowing up factories? That's the female experience?
>I have heard the movie is decent
To casuals maybe. A crippling problem with the film is that these characters are haphazardly forced together, and Harley herself doesn't really have a motivation or character arc to speak of.
It's an action movie with only one good action scene.
It’s because Harley Quinn is a terrible, awful character, and it’s about time people finally rejected her.
>But, I definitely do feel that everyone was pretty quick to jump on a certain angle
Maybe next time tell the marketing to not make the whole promotion about how your movie is woke and is here to smack the patriarchy if you don't want people to "jump on a certain angle"
>>"I know that the studio had really high expectations for the movie
Then why did they release it in February with so little marketing most didn't even realize it came out?
Because it was related to Suicide Squad and Suicide Squad sucked ass.
>she literally had “Puddin” choking her neck with a choker. So, there were obvious and deliberate decisions that I’m sure were made when designing her look for her character and central relationship in that movie. For us, she goes through that, and she goes through a physical transformation as well.
...ah yes, she went from wearing a choker for her boyfriend to wearing literal dog tags. Keeno.
WTF I LOVE BOCO NOW????
The other big thing is that when people compare Harley to Deadpool, Deadpool tends to get beaten up when he's being stupid. Deadpool gets injured very graphically when he becomes too annoying. With Harley Quinn, she does awful things, yet the moment she gets hurt, it acts like a puppy has been kicked.
It was as bad as Suicide Squad. Nobody skipped seeing it because le woman of color director. Such entitlement.
Someone also said that little girls like Harley (terrible parents...), but couldn’t see this because it’s rated R.
Fuck off Boco, who are you to criticize anyone?
It wasn't nearly as bad as Suicide Squad. Get real.
Pedodads try to get their sons and daughters interested in Harley Quinn so they can have cosplay sex with them or jack off to pictures of them in costume. It's pretty sick.
>LA girls as the only target demographic
Yeah I wonder why it didn't do well.
>Huntress just might be the first socially awkward superhero
Yeah right.
Harley is a murderous psychopath and Stockholm example who should not be inspiring anyone, and it’s bullshit how DC and WB push her as some kind of feminist icon.
Kill yourself, tripfaggot
Should have been about the Birds of Prey trying to foil a plot by Harley Quinn. Also the Birds of Prey should have included Oracle, and should have actually looked like their comic book counterparts.
I didnt see it in theatres because I generally only go to one movie a year, if that
But I bought it on digital when it came out and really liked it. It was a gun movie. Not sure what people are mad about.
The marketing was pretty shit though. Probably didnt help.
This, and they should have casted attractive white actresses. And put them in tight sexy costumes.
characters nobody cares about
>It was a gun movie
No it wasn't.
Suicide Squad had "sexy Harley Quinn" and it was still shit. The last flaw of Birds of prey was the "hotness" of the actreses. It's just a bad movie, badly written and badly acted. Even MacGreggor (no pun intended) was shit, so maybe even the direction was bad.
If you removed about half the cast and reworked the plot a bit, there's a decent crime flick about a former gangster's moll with delusions of importance taking on a crime boss in an attempt to give herself some actual cred you could make out of it. Which is another weird thing about this movie, after SS and even the setup within this film, Harley feels like a complete nobody.
Yes it was. There were multiple guns in it.
>fun movie
Is what what I meant
Canary not being white was fine. She just needed a faithful god damn design.
>It was a gun movie
Exactly one good action scene (the police raid) and one so-so action scene (the final showdown) and a huge nothing-burger the rest of the time.
Is that stock response now or something?
I'm a fan of Harley and would have went to see the movie if not for being told repeatedly by the people involved in the movie that the film wasn't for me and that I wasn't invited to see it. And thats fine, I harbor no ill-will, there are plenty of movies that are targeted at different demographics than mine. The Notebook wasn't made for me and more power to it. But the thing is, this films demo *was* aimed at me yet the film's creators didnt want my money.
I don't know who they thought the film was aimed at. Girls dont like these type of films, and even after telling guys to stay away they still ended up providing a majority of the ticket sales for the movie. Girls did not support this film.
I've a 4k pirated copy of the movie and I've still not watched it, the trailers looked awful.
the trailers are better than the movie
I enjoyed pretty much the whole thing. I was never bored. I dug thr black masks bits, and the acting behind his little buddy eith the impossible to spell name. It was a cool popcorn movie. Its not my favorite due film I'd rste it higher than suicide squad and maybe aquaman.
Wrecking shit in your life, and others', just because you're a woman, and you can.
The films was aimed at women who are sexually attracted to margot robbie, based on who I see drooling over it on the socials
Dunno. I liked it.
It was cartoony like Shazam, and I liked that.
It was better than suicide squad(not saying much desu) and not edgy like the early dcu movies.
Ramona Flowers.
Everyone had unique fighting styles, thank god. I hate when everyone in a superhero movie just knows MMA.
And the sound track was good.
It obviously wasnt perfect but I feel like a lot of people who actually saw it enjoyed it.
I know someone exactly like that.
anyone who liked it is retarded
I still thought she was sexy. She was just less revealing and acted goofy.
Plus there was sexy huntress
Obviously not the core point of what's being said but I'm curious do people actually give half a shit about the director of a movie?
Like, will certain directors actually cause people to flat out nope a film?
because neither batman or joker was in it.
Let's not go that far... it's not a terrible movie. It's just not a very good movie, and the director pushing Harley as some feminist icon anti-hero has her head up her own ass.
>higher then aquaman
You mean the film with the stronger cast, plot and visuals?
>Everyone had unique fighting styles
I know its both a WTF and Why? moment, but I personally loved the battle arena that was in the funhouse. I love the idea that joker/harley had enough foresight to build a place to fuck people up in that caters to their style. I didn't think the movie was going to have a sequence like that, and I appreciated it.
I liked it too. Of the ones I liked I would probably go Shazam>BoP>Aquaman but they were all good. Joker would be above Shazam but I suppose that movie doesnt really count.
Are you 12? Did you just arrive on Yas Forums and never saw anyone refusing to read something because it's by Millar, Bendis or whoever?
I go back and forth on it desu. Aquaman is hella campy and I'm about that some days but not other days. It's a step or two away from Schumacher batman for me.
I think I generally go
Shazam>bop>ww=aquaman>sq
Or
Shazam > aquaman > bop = ww > sq
It also doesnt help that the plot they chose for aquaman is one of the most tired aquaman plots at this point
And they wasted Cassandra Cain on a MacGuffin
Is the animated harley show a better example of the character then birds of prey?
I like Suicide Squad better. Fight me.
Same. If I was counting joker itd be st the top. But it's it's own little thing and it just feels downright unfair to compare the others to it.
Maybe she'll be a sexy batwoman when she's older but right now shes just a kid?
I respect your opinion but also think you're crazy
Maybe i missed it in the marketing, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Victor Zsasz in the movie. Maybe not an A lister, but a good villain to have in this kind of movie.
Undue not undo*
What kind of retard wrote this? Doesn't THR have editors?
Not really, no
Not with the notion that Harley is her mentor or something
