refrences are fine but when you copy stuff frame by frame or take parts of iconic characters designs (like captain harlock or simons glasses) its just plain lazy.

What is it about Steven Universe that makes people chimp out?
Utena took notes from Lady Oscar
Lady Oscar took notes from Princess Knight
Princess Knight took notes from Sleeping Beauty/Snow White
C'est la vie. It's the way of the world.
Who cares man
oh my gosh what do you MEAN SU had a 2 second reference REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Steven the Swordfighter was a really good episode
>What is a homage hurr durrr
Idiot
>American cartoon ripping off old popular anime
In other news the sky is blue and grass is green
Bet you're one of those fuckers that says the Akira bike scene is an exception even though going of your logic that is a rip off shot for shot and not a homage
"Rock lesbian cartoon bad"
Congratulations, you just described the 00's.
Meh Steven Universe is not good but not because of this.
Its not lazy.
this isnt the only time they did it thogh. look at the link.
Supply and demand, people enjoy the same tropes so that tropes keep being produced.
Or just Steven Universe is shit.
It's called reference, op.
I don't chimp out but its in the same category as homestuck to me.
Too autistic to even attempt caring about.
Or Becky is just an obnoxious weeb
Weebs can't stand this shit was more relevant that most animemes made in the last decade. Rememeber that space asexual rock anime? Neither do I.
If you don't care about it then why did you make a post about it?
remember that one video game sequence that plagarized so much sources including Steven Universe
I watched Steven Universe blind, loved it, and gasped delightfully every time there was a background reference.
I never found it detrimental, it enhanced the experience.
Same with the Evangelion claps.
referenced*
because quarantine is making me go insane and I want some anime to watch, and the list of references might have something good in it.
Also I was hoping someone posted the webm of the Green Lantern comic ripping off Gurren Lagann
I do remember
>Still whiteknighting the Sony short
Absolute cringe
>references bad!
Be honest with the thread, OP. You've never even seen Utena, haven't you? What are you really angry about?
This was most evident when Growing Pains released and anime twitter fucking chimped out and cried that their medium showed trauma better instead of "telling" (despite the fact all of SU had evidence of it whether physical or mental and he was literally at a doctor's office getting a regular explanation). I get not liking SU, it's the autistic sour grapes that annoys me. Just wank and get over it already jeez
>Weebs can't stand this shit was more relevant that most animemes made in the last decade.
Most weebs I know who've actually watched SU like it though. The only ones who don't are people who never would have liked it because of their own politics.
SU is at best an interesting concept poorly executed. That's it. I dont mind homages but you better damn well have your show in order before you strut those out. SU failed to do this pretty consistently over its run.
Was it the worst thing ever? No. Could it been good? Yes. Was it ever good? Only in small pieces here and there.
It is funny that anime gets an excuse for doing this meanwhile if a cartoon about sentient rocks does it suddenly it's bad
The only weebs I've seen that don't like SU are either the ones that act super big brain about the entertainment they consume because they watched half of Evangelion once and criticize popular shows often, are heavy into the mindset of "cartoon bad anime good" even if an anime is pure shit, or the afromentioned political reasons
I've never seen a weeb that actually has a reasonable dislike for the show
Better to pander than to straight up trace.
"B-but Steven Jewniverse did it first! Serves them right for copying one frame of glorious nippon animation!"
>modern cartoons
>Includes a 6 year old screenshot
this is embarrassing. did anyone sue?
Good luck trying to sue a huge mega company at best they'll settle and throw some change at you.
I've always find funny that the people who bitch about modern animation sustain their complains on fucking steven universe.
Remember kids it’s a reference if you like the show and stealing if you don’t!
true, but CN is owned by Warner Media, and i'm sure they've sued for less
Watch something you enjoy instead of making the same points about a concluded show you haven't liked since you first saw it.
it's probably the rep that comes with su for being popular with the tumblr crowd or 'sjw's.' it's really low hanging fruit
Nah all the blame was passed to the animation artist hired. I think the dude got fired but I don't think lawsuits got involved.
The artist went into hiding
It's not even a good point either considering that frame is the only aspect of the sequence that could be considered copying. The rest of the choreography is a homage
This I'm a huge weeb I collect doujin buy etc etc and most anime fans i know like SU and say it's great the only people I know that don't like SU are usually THIS arm chair video essay anime analysis writers I kid you not
thats not referencing so much as the best way to emphasize the size/length of something composition-wise
going from one bottom corner to the top opposite corner gets the most length out of whatever the subject is. add in exaggerated perspective and you can get something incredibly imposing/ridiculous looking with a single shot
its a basic trick most artists pick up as they learn composition
now copying an entire animation sequence, nearly pose for pose, thats pushing the reference/homage line
>arm chair video essay anime analysis writers
Replace anime with cartoons and you pretty just described most of Yas Forums
Didn't this animator trace many different indie animators?
It's literally one fucking frame user. Did you even watch the episode?
Motha fucker did I type that shit. Are you dyslexic? Did you fail school so hard that your reading compression is that of a 2 yearold?
Nigga thats to emphasise length of a weapon
This is why I wouldn’t do any references if I had my own cartoon. It would be entirely original.
of course the weeb with the anime reaction image is going to defend when anime does the same exact thing all the fucking time
Yes.
*cough*Akira bikeslide*cough*
no I havent seen Utena I wanted to post the one comparing SU and cowboy bebop but it woulnt let me. im annoyed because SU refrences anime so much that it feels like they are using refrences in place of trying to be original.
Utena's a good show. Would've been nice if Pearl's sword fight had more unique choreography or used references that weren't so close to Utena, but I liked SU's sequence as well, nonetheless.
Plus, it's been like, 7 years, man. Please move on with your life.
As opposed to every anime that references other anime instead of being anything original?
cant find a better video but its not just a single frame
youtu.be
but thats more of a homage since so much of SU is based around shojo mange elements. would still be better if there were more actual reference to it, but SU already cemented how much it wants to riff off shojo manga that people can probably pick up on the reference if theyre in the know
actually shitty rip-offs is this shit i cant tell if youre serious or not, but thats from Necropolis
I like RS and I think some ideas and characters on SU are cool but I really fucking hate Steven so I can't watch this show. Show is ruined by having a male protagonist. Hopefully I will like her next thing.
This
Weebs have no right to complain about this when shit like Pop Team Epic exists which is purely references and no substance whatsoever. At least Steven Universe HAS substance even if it's shit
why are we comparing something made purely for comedy purposes and that referential humor to something thats trying to present itself as serious?
thats like comparing fucking Robot Chicken to Fullmetal Alchemist
>CAMERA POSITIONS AND PERSPECTIVE ARE PLAGIARISM
