>steve purcell works for pixar
>directed brave
>still no monkey island or sam & max movie from him
Is this one of the most legendary cases of sidetracked hires in history?
Steve purcell works for pixar
i guess he doesn't suck enough cocks to get his projects pushed
Fucking shame, especially since disney now OWNS all the lucasarts licenses he worked on.
>directed brave
No he didn't.
co-directed Brave & has writer credit
Yep. Co-directed it and co-wrote the screenplay. Probably his worst work ever
I hardly say this about any creator, but purcell legit has lost his spark. He used to be involved with some of the most fun and creative projects the west had to offer and now he's stuck doing dumbass pixar shit and even on record saying he wont push for sam & max because the moral ambiguity doesnt fit pixar. Such a fucking tragedy to see him waste his talent like that. At least he's getting paid well, but creatively he seems like he's burned out.
>and even on record saying he wont push for sam & max because the moral ambiguity doesnt fit pixar.
Why would you even want him to have Pixar do Sam and Max? Think about what you just said there.
Lets be honest, the world isn't ready yet for a sam & max or monkey island movie.
i mean its okay to languish and disappear from the creative sphere and just do grunt work, in the end you can just offer so much.
So you're saying we would be more likely to get a truthful Sam and Max story if he ever went to, say, Illumination?
As much as I love the comics the series' potential has been dead for over a decade. Its legacy is comprised entirely of decent comic books, an above-average cartoon, good point & click games and a very expensive hat in Team Fortress 2.
I fear sam & max wouldn't fit in this post ironic world we live in. It would be constant meta jokes about the franchise. I know the series is known for it's dry humor, but it should never stoop to post post post post irony and lmao we know we're terrible that's the point dabbing ironically or anything like that.
Why would you want this to happen, specially with current Pixar involved?
Real talk, if Purcell was on board and oversaw shit, Sony could totally do a authentic Sam and Max movie. He could also go to any streaming service and probably get a show going. A personal hope of mine was an Adult Swim Sam and Max cartoon. I know the duo aren't as raunchy as the usual AS fare, but the studio has been doing pretty okay with shit like ballmasterz. I could see them doing great things with the property.
>a very expensive hat in Team Fortress 2.
Kek, for real?
The comics are excellent though, I think their value is comparatively superior than the cartoon's, and I love the cartoon. But the bombastic dialogue and narration style works better in print.
Also, while the first game was fucking amazing, the TTG ones had that disappointing low-budget/low-scope feel everything they made had. If only the original Freelance Police had not ben cancelled: youtu.be
It also takes shots at literally everyone, which wouldnt blend with our current culture of crying women and unshaven babies
This hat is unironically worth like $80.
Steve Purcell is one of the most talented to ever do it, I love him
i didn't know about the first game. is there a way to emulate it?
>i didn't know about the first game. is there a way to emulate it?
Which game? You mean sam & max hit the road?
yeah i only knew about the 3d cg games
don't forget Sam and Max's guns that go for close to $20 each
I don't think he lost his spark. I think the industry dulls the shit out of it to the point where the final product isn't really their voice at all but they still put their name on it because it would be career suicide if you're so embarrassed by your work, that you want to take off your credit title or use a fake name for a fucking Pixar movie.

Here you go. This is the DOS CD version of sam & max. If it doesn't come with scummvm, download it here

>or monkey island movie.
Reminder that we almost got a monkey island movie and it was cancelled in pre-production and the script rewritten as "pirates of the carribean". No shit.
thanks user!
God, remember the first week when TF2 trading came out.
>Keys were considered worthless
>Chieftan and Dapper Topper was the most expensive
>Bill's Hat was considered shit-tier
>Max and Earbuds were god-tier
>I fear sam & max wouldn't fit in this post ironic world we live in. It would be constant meta jokes about the franchise. Ironically sam&max was one of the first post-ironic comic books.
It does explain how Davy Jones was pretty much LeChuck's zombie form, just with the wriggly beard. Which, from what I heard, was something that Ron Gilbert hadn't thought of, but wishes that he had.
And of course we know he's fruitlessly begging Disney to give him the IP back.
>Freelance Police was mostly complete but Lucasarts cancelled it in a panic only months before release because a report told them the point and click adventure market in Europe (Biggest market in the world for those games) had just "Disappeared overnight"
>Devs have said that it was in the polishing stage and removing the last few critical bugs, so it could have theoretically be done in two-three months before it was ready to ship
>Lucasarts refused to sell the game rights to anyone else
I'm still mad. Technically Disney owns the rights now but I bet the code base needed to complete the game has been lost forever.
The whole thing's probably gone. I doubt anyone in the game industry keeps ahold of things like that like the film industry does with movies and TV shows.
Lucasarts was apparently very good at archiving their game studio assets and someone released a book with art from Freelance police, the cancelled Indiana Jones game and Star Wars 1313 but no ones really talked about the code bases for those games. There's a chance. But it's very small.
>It does explain how Davy Jones was pretty much LeChuck's zombie form, just with the wriggly beard. Which, from what I heard, was something that Ron Gilbert hadn't thought of, but wishes that he had.
Look up the concept art for the movie, it's seriously fucking great. Like it looks so much better than what they ended up making after a bunch of revisions and stripping the brand off it.
Sam & Max is the one of the few comics to make me laugh out loud multiple times
The Pirates films weren't all that bad, even if they were a glorified take on the classic ride. The first two were pretty great, while the remaining three were all over the place. Can only hope they've given up on that stupid all-female reboot. As for the Monkey Island movie, sounds like it could have been interesting, kind of surprised it wasn't considered for a TV show beforehand. I'd have watched the hell out of that, even if it was just episodic adventures with Guybrush and LeChuck butting heads like Pirates of Dark Water or that one Peter Pan cartoon.
Just seems like very few people in the gaming industry care to do that. Konami sure as hell didn't or else we wouldn't have had that dumpster fire that was the Silent Hill Collection (which somehow has defenders to this day). At least it's a good thing that we've got people like Bluepoint who know how to extract code from retail games, or else all of gaming history would probably be fucked.
>As for the Monkey Island movie, sounds like it could have been interesting
Absolutely
Sounds like a more realistic version of what that faggot Ozzie was trying to push, except with the "Mind your manners" bullshit.
Why do the Zootopia characters looks so dead-eyed and lifeless?
Drawfag who made it probably didn't think to put as much detail into the eyes
I don't know anybody who could firebomb kittens
Depends on how they were done. If they stuck true to the source material, they could work, and nothing about either series was exactly "objectionable" to the "standards" of today. Of course, animation that isn't strictly for kids still is struggling in this day and age, even with all the South Parks, Venture Bros, Family Guys, and many others.
The cartoon was great
It's mind blowing how this franchise doesn't have more followers. Everything in it has been a hit, but somehow it's all flown under the radar. The average normalfag would think Tell Tale's first game is The Walking Dead, and the comic doesn't get mentioned in recommendation threads. No one remembers the cartoon and Hit the Road is highly praised yet seemingly not many people have played it.
Is the comedy too niche to have wide spread appeal, or do I over exaggerate how good it is?
I love how the cartoon adapted some of the comic stories, and how some episodes had small self contained cut away gags at the end. It kept the same feel of the comics.
>That one bit where they make a joke about there being no air on the moon
>Cuts to the comic strip that had the same quote
Bit of column A bit of column B. Sam and Max is the kinda humor that you get as a kid and grows with you. If you showed the public Sam and Max now the kids would go apeshit but the parents and older generation would go on and on about how crass it is or they'd find something racist about it or they'd say the pictured joke was cringy or rape culture or some other such bullshit.
Sam and Max is looney tunes humor and the world just doesn't want to let us have that. They're redoing Looney tunes but have you even seen any excitement for the project outside of maybe some Yas Forums threads or an obscure tweet form some twit? I guarantee that it and the upcoming animaniacs reboot is going to be defanged, tied up, and muted to appeal to the "widest demographic."
Better to let it rest in obscurity where it can be what it wants to be.
Man what happened? People are anti fun nowadays
That is a great gag. There should have been more gags directly referencing the comics. The talk about the body's organs at the end of "Tonight We Love" is great as well.
>Wow. I guess. I was all wrong. about the pancreas.
It has perfect line delivery.
The internet has made it so that if you complain about something loud enough you'll get an audience, do that for long enough and your audience will grow to the point where you can make money off of them, rinse and repeat until you've got enough cash to live on.
From Alex Jones to the Social Justice Paladin riding their high horse on twitter it's the same shit.
Until this trend dies no one is going to spend big money on a project like this, especially when it's animated. It's all about publicity nowadays and if you get enough screaming heads complaining about your product it reflects on your brand and ya can't have that.
>Better to let it rest in obscurity where it can be what it wants to be.
I can accept this as long as it means the corpse won't be defiled. I'm holding hope that a fan will make a new comic or game one day. I'd be happy even if it turns out bad as long as the characters act as they should. It sucks that The Walking Dead was such a huge hit and now season four will never happen.
Sadly this. Just look at that shithole resetera. Easily worse than tumblr and twitter combined when it comes to scummy behavior and contrarianism.
Doesn't help that youtubes screwed over anyone creative from thriving on youtube and only bottom feeders can benefit from how Youtube monetisation works.
>Easily worse than tumblr and twitter combined
It was great to learn that game developers were told not to answer questions there because the site is never going to be pleased.
I still don't get how they aren't in trouble over some of the shit they pulled. Didn't someone there hijack the forum for a game that came out and threatened the developer into apologizing over some stupid joke? I mean fucking Christ, pretty sure that's terrorism, or at least some kind of extorsion.
Honestly, I think Sam and Max is just always hits. The comics, the cartoon, the games. I'd say the lowest point was maybe season 1 of the Telltale games, but I loved 2 and 3.
I feel like the cartoon had the best voices. Those high energy, very upbeat voices paired with the dialogue made for a hilarious contrast. Tey make lines like "Max's terrifying head is a universal symbol of something or other!" and "Well, this has grown tiresome!" even funnier.
