Can anyone explain to me why most writers in comics are middle aged balding men with a beard and a bald spot the size of manhatten that write snarky and agressive comics about punching people, which seems to be a fantasy of theirs?
Why does anyone pretend this is anything but a toxic boys club that lets in some underpaid female interns for face?
Progessive comic writers
HUGE lack of standards is the reason why.
Anyone with a working brain would have fired Mark Waid's sorry ass a long time ago.
>HUGE lack of standards is the reason why.
That and lack of talent. 85% the decent writers burned bridges with the big two, so they're willing to take anyone.
>Anyone with a working brain would have fired Mark Waid's sorry ass a long time ago.
Everybody knows Waid sucks. It's weird how out of the hundreds of comics he's written, he's only remembered for Kingdom Come and his Flash.
Because they have skeletons in their closets and are desperately trying to hide it by showing how much they are on "da girlz" side. Happens in the entertainment industry constantly.
I think they hate themselves very much and therefore seek the validation of people who will praise them for that kind of bullshit.
>they have skeletons in their closets
Not in their closets. The skeletons are proudly displayed on their social medias and articles like Halloween decorations.
>he's only remembered for Kingdom Come and his Flash.
And 52 and irredeemable and daredevil and birthright and
Those 2 you mentioned are just his BEST known
friendly reminder that is has always been like this. In fact, op's pic related has written some of the most boringly by the numbers stories ever, american comics have always been a boys club and this attitude cripples the medium to no end
>Everybody knows Waid sucks
Huh? Everyone? He has written some duds (who hasn’t) but he’s generally quite solid even now
He has also written a kino Cap and the only solo run black widow has that’s worth reading (although that’s more due to the art)
Kingdom Come and Flash aren’t even his best stuff
Ok OP
I present to you IGNITED.
With that co-writer there’s no chance it can be good. Once again, a dud doesn’t mean everyone hates him, especially an indie dud
I would argue his fantastic 4 was better than kingdom come even
But then again I’m also a weirdo who liked his LOSH so take my opinion with a grain of salt
>Punching people they think are evil?
>In MY vigilante stories?
They're called power fantasies for a reason.
>Everybody knows Waid sucks. It's weird how out of the hundreds of comics he's written, he's only remembered for Kingdom Come and his Flash.
Fucking casuals
I can read as many NTR doujins and still get off my rocks. But I can sorta admit that it is a perversion.
What reason do you have to read a backlog of 80 years of face punching escapist fantasies for impotent males?
It’s equivalent to saying “Miller is only remembered for his Daredevil and Batman”
Because when it isn’t just about punching it can be really good
I feel like you already made this thread and it didn't work so you just made another one
COVID is really taking its toll on this board.
Casual/Trolls fuck off!
Kingdom Come is fine, but it only has the status it does because of Alex Ross and if you think otherwise you’re fucking delusional and your name is Mark Waid. The rest of his shit is either bad or okay. The reason that he’s gotten an inordinate amount of attention in the last few years is because he fucked up and got into it with d&c. You don’t have to be a fan of ya boi zack to understand that screeching at fans and doubling down on the shit you’ve made that has gotten complaints is a really stupid idea.
Wasn't me. I also wasn't aiming at the whole "hurr where are the badass comic writers gone" incel bullshit either but wondering why we still pretend those powerless male fantasies of escapism have anything to do with progressive feminism, when its the same men from the boys club writing them, only with the genders swapped?
It's still a stupid male power fantasy.
Exactly, only causals think kingdom come is Waid’s best work. He wrote a far better Superman in birthright
Your thread is shit. Go read a comic or discuss one. Or go rant about this bullshit on Yas Forums
>What reason do you have to read a backlog of 80 years of face punching escapist fantasies for impotent males?
Because you're an impotent male trying to feign superiority
No. I'm talking about comics here you crazy incel. Also I'm not going to Yas Forums because that's not a place I'd like to hang out. But you're proving again that somehow people who have problems with a bunch of middle aged toxic men creating their dumb ass male fantasies as "empowering for women" is somehow a nazis, when it's the other way around?
I remember Waid for Birthright.
>No. I'm talking about comics here you crazy incel.
Person who doesn't read comics pretends to be superior to those who do? That's typical shill behavior.
Miller is mostly remembered for his daredevil and Batman. People don’t say “Frank Miller? You mean the guy who worked on the twilight zone and robocop comics?” 90% of discussions about Miller revolve around his Batman, his daredevil, and sin city. The other 10% are about ronin, 300, and his more off the wall shit like holy terror. This is the case with pretty much every artist though, only their best two or three works are remembered and talked about.
>It’s equivalent to saying “Miller is only remembered for his Daredevil and Batman”
Well it's true.
He's not going to be remembered for Sin City, 300 and Ronin even though they were decent.
I'd say he'd still be remembered for Sin City on account he did many stories for it. 300 could be remembered if people still highly regard the Snyder movie in the decades to come, but that's iffy.
Best thing Miller ever did was Martha Washington and none of you people here read it because it isnt capeshit.
General rule is an author’s best known work is not his actual best work
Its pretty much one of the best american comic books of the 90s. I wonder why it's this obscure.
>Put a woman or POC in charge of a progressive comic
>“They only got this position because of their sex/race! I’m not going to spend any money on something written by someone who hasn’t even had experience writing comics!”
>Put an experienced writer (who is likely to be a middle-aged white person due to the demographics of who worked in comics for the past thirty-odd years) in charge of a progressive comic
>“Why did they choose a white guy to write this progressive stuff? I’m not going to spend any money on something an experienced writer crapped out just to cater to anyone who isn’t me!”
Because nothing is more progressive than having men lead the revolution.
Waid is a terrible writer when he’s trying to be woke or hip with current trends. I think that’s why many people don’t like “CIS WHITE M*LE” writers doing stuff like that because they tend to overcompensate. He can still be decent when he’s not being overtly preachy
>be chubby 40 something
>take legacy superhero... but let him say FUCK a lot and give him some vice like porn addiction or heroine abuse
MASTERPIECE
Most Gen X writers are complete SHIT and most of them dont even understand the value of comics being a visual medium.
Okay but none of this excuses Waid's track record of insanely shitty behavior. Look at the wrestling business: Teddy Hart is a fantastic athlete even after all these years but only the most desperate companies are going to book him because the dude's personal life is a long-running white-trash soap opera. And this isn't just Mark Waid, either:
>That entire period where Frank Miller was getting work despite being very obviously unwell leading to works he's since renounced
>EVS still getting collaborative offers despite being a drama-mongering youtuber who talks mad shit about his peers and may or may not have a mob who doxes and harasses people he doesn't like
>Zoe Quinn got to write comics at all in the face of literally everything she's done
Comics seems to be the only place where someone's numerous personal faults don't stop them from getting work.
>take legacy superhero... but let him say FUCK a lot and give him some vice like porn addiction or heroine abuse
Excuse me, Alan Moore isn’t gen X, and he’s 66
>Comics seems to be the only place where someone's numerous personal faults don't stop them from getting work.
Uh, have you heard of any entertainment industry?
Movies? TV? Music? Sports? Hell, even actual books?
I can’t believe you think comics is the ONLY industry where this happens. It happens so much in academia as well
You mention sports and Ronaldo is still playing after his lawyers admitted he’s paying women to shut up about sexual abuse
Because most sports fans dont give a shit lol
>wrestling
Bruh Vince is still CEO of WWE after...everything
>You mention sports and Ronaldo is still playing after his lawyers admitted he’s paying women to shut up about sexual abuse
Remember when ribéry got caught fucking child prostitutes and just fumbled some half-assed apology and everyone INSTANTLY forgot?
I remembered it was still being talked up along with Miller's other stuff back in the early 90's. I think the issue is that it wasn't coming out on a regular basis the way Sin City was. Give Me Liberty was released in 1990, Goes To War was 1994, Happy Birthday and Stranded in Space were 1995 one-shots, Saves the World was 1997, and Martha Washington Dies was 2007.
Sin City at least had one comic or a miniseries out each year all throughout the 90's, I think. Plus having a successful movie in the 00's helped it.
Then there was how in the 00's there were people turning against Miller, and I remembered comics reviewer Alan David Doane shitting on Martha Washington Dies.
Fucking shame the comic was too big brained for critics. If Martha Washington had the success it deserved the comicsphere would look different these days.
>but he’s generally quite solid even now
From 2015 to 2017 he was writing a boring mediocre run on Avengers, and also Champions, the poster book for awful woke current year Marvel at it's wokest and most awful. He's had a well-received run on Doctor Strange since then, but it's going to take some time for people to forget how bad Champions was.
The other reason I can think of is that it's Miller and Gibbons, and not Miller all the way even though I actually like Gibbons art on Martha Washington way more than on Watchmen and audiences at the time might've preferred Sin City just because Miller was doing art.
As for critics I think the thing was that in 00's Miller made known his anger after 9/11 and comics critics and fans were feeling he was Islamophobic. I think the other part of the criticism directed toward Martha Washington Dies was that it was too short, and others felt that Saves the World was a better ending (and I kinda see why).
>leading to works he's since renounced
Let's be honest, Miller just said what he had to say to be able to keep working without people trying to cancel him. Whether he truly believes it is something only he knows.
That new mutant team really brought you tourist faggots out of the woodwork huh
Waid's worst book is better than anything that EVS ever worked on
Johnsfags eat shit and kys too
>I don’t like your opinion so you must not be “one of us”
I’ve been on this board for almost 10 years, you fucking idiot. The only thing everyone can agree on is that Hellboy was pretty good. There are people on here who defend Snyder’s movies unironically for Christ’s sake.
>progressive
But Waid isn't really that progressive, he's actually pretty neoliberal. Immortal Hulk is a much better example of a progressive comic book.
>The only thing everyone can agree on is that Hellboy was pretty good
What? Who does? The devil you know was the worst ending I have seen in ages
As much as he's a screeching SJW online and outbursts like the phone thing in his Amazing Heros days he still has a rep for delivering solid work and more people IN the industry still like him than those who don't. Also he's on time and it's been said from a technical (not creative) writing standpoint his comic scripts are the best to work with editorially and from an artists standpoint.
>diverse comic about a muslim inhuman
>writer is some white woman that later converted to islam
>The same thread but now made by a discord tranny
Dilate then commit 41%
>Best thing Miller ever did was Martha Washington
No. It was great, but no.
Midlife crisis, want to feel like they’re doing something good, brownie points, take your pick
