That is an entirely unsupported statement. Amethyst almost killed herself by falling off a cliff. Lapis was crippled by someone stepping on her.

The Breaking Point was designed specifically to shatter gems, and if wielded by their insanely strong arms, would be devastatingly powerful.

There is no reason to assume the Diamonds are more difficult to shatter than real-life ones. They believed that Pink had been shattered by an ordinary gem with a sword.

So they, at least, believed it was possible.
