It set up a deeper dive on the series, only to keep it surface level. It brought up big ideas but wasn't really able to handle them in a more mature way. It was a bit too afraid to poke at the supporting cast and really dig into everyone. Which 10 minute episodes really don't help with. Jasper is still one of the more interesting characters to me cause the show is willing to go yeah you are a crazy cunt. While others like Peridot turn into a meme goblin. Closest it got to pulling back the layers was an almost speak to the camera PSA from Connie's hot fucking mom. SU didn't get that deep either, but was at least more of a mix of drama and action with some really neat concepts that strung you along. If you were really into the more sci-fi elements the whole body horror aspect and shit goes out like a bit of wet fart.
Don't think it devalues the series, but was kind of just oh more of this? Alright. Steven gets upset and then gets told everyone loves him. Sounds about right, throw in a few lines that oh well he does need a therapist cause it is deeper this time! Turns out you can just fix everything with a song.

I get you can't have a proper huge fight with it and save the day with punches. To some degree I respect SU keeping on message. But action doesn't just represent action, just like when a character breaks out into song it is a sign that they have emotional been driven to something. Give me Steven wrecking shop a bit, him lashing out so much is an embodiment of his feelings so really needs to hit home. Have the attacks on him represent how characters think to deal with issues, but then realise what Steven has taught them and find better methods. Like instead of Lapid binding him she forces him down a path by creating big walls and shit. Can still culminate in a big hug but maybe he needs a bit of a work over first to listen.

Nah it is legit better than the rest, that is a low bar. SUF ending feels appropriate at the very least, nothing got ruined and there was no one left to turn gay at the last moment. But what made many fall in love with the series was an expanding world that could surprise you. For some though it might be sour as did SU really deliver on much of the set up? Not just the actual mystery boxes but the scale the series hinted at. To me it confirms that SU was always a bit afraid to really push the boat out, doesn't mean the journey was bad. Overall I think I like it better than the original series ending just cause that felt rushed.

The pure lack of depth all the humans get is the worst. I loved when Symbionic Titan had the government investigating all the weird alien shit, but none of that here. It's like Beach City, beyond and all those characters simply don't exist whenever gem stuff happens.

Exactly. The whole reason Steven was suffering was because he was keeping all of his shit to himself and refusing to confront his demons. What we needed to see was Steven coming to terms with his dark thoughts and feelings and accepting that having them doesn't make him a bad person, just someone who has a lot of damage to work through. They could have approached this in multiple ways. Instead the day is saved by everyone hugging him and telling him they care about him. Steven already knows his family care about him - half of the season was him hiding his issues because he didn't want to worry them.
The issue Steven faced came from within himself, nobody else. Steven had a support network but he pushed everyone away because he didn't know how to explain his pain to them. The lesson he needed to learn was that only he can save himself from his inner conflicts, only he can give himself inner peace. And the resolution of the episode didn't teach him that.
