Good evening owls,

Put out the cat, go to the bathroom--this is the big daddy of them all.

HERE WE GO

So we open with a prologue here, and as I said last night, the music is SO much denser it's hard to describe. But this opening is a (pitched down) version of Brunnhilde's hail to the sun, going into Rhine music...eventually ending in the Fate motif.

Hello, Storyteller.

>GOTTERDAMMERUNG
>The Twilight of the Gods
I have no smart ass thing to say. That's just a great title.

So, how's everyone holding up?

I fixed something on my PC that had been bugging me, got some more garden soil, and ordered a plant delivery

It really is a metal title, isn't it

Valhalla music touches throughout here

So this is what the very first pages of PCR Rheingold were referring to--this is the first time we actually hear explicitly about it. Wotan gave up an eye to cut a branch for the spear, and the tree faded.

The "sing, sister" is a musical refrain throughout this very formal scene

(everyone has trouble staging this scene--it's very static and talky, but the musical narration is glorious, and there are some very important callbacks later in the show, like right here)

>Chekov's pile of flammable god-killing logs

Hey OP.
The Rope of Fate is the one you use to hang yourself, right?

It's def interesting to see what comics can do and cannot do vs. the opera itself. Like one of the strengths of having a page of art is you can abstract or dramatically visual or move away from the characters without really impacting anything. On stage, obviously, not an option. But shit, you can't hear a comic.

Holy shit, those Rhine maidens are shameless sluts, just look at them.

I'm not even trying to tag all the musical references because of how quickly they layer on and how transformed they are, and that's a lot of what is going on here

Basically my favourite moment in this entire thing is what the Rhine Maidens do at the end of this one.

I'm actually here to post even though i've missed the first 3/4 and am coming in late so just kinda shitposting along

This is Erda's "sinking" music--and then here comes all the Alberich references, and FATE again

I'm happy to have everyone here--I know this is A LOT to put it mildly

CURSE motif

Might as well listen. I missed Valkyrie but I'm gonna catch it back with the free trial option.

BTW because this thread is all, like, educated - what's the deal with three fates/norns popping up in different mythologies? Just a common origin point?

Anyone catch the Direct yesterday? Now that I'm over my usual bitterness at the lack of Metroid news, there was some decent stuff.

Man I don't have the ears for this. How young did you get into opera, OP?

>Just a common origin point?
Might be tied to the prototypical Indo-European culture?

now this begins a long musical segment, often performed on its own as "Dawn and Rhine Journey" with the voices cut out

I was always into classical hardcore more than just opera but I watched the PBS stuff and then man, I would have been a 3rd year in college? Friend said "come visit me and we'll go to Meistersinger"

Kind of interested in BD2 but I'm not sure how you do the super-traditional JRPG but let's be clever about it a second time around.

I was always into symphonic music but I got the DRAMA bug hard after that, lol

but also it takes many, many listenings to start to catch all the references and nuances and cross-references in these works

this bass clarinet theme is Brunnhilde's

I've legit gone from laughing at the machine to being in awe of it.

so this is a slow depiction of sunrise over Brunnhilde's rock, moving into a love duet, moving into a musical depiction of Siegfried sailing the Rhine

be in awe of that brass section too

It is goddamn impressive for what is essentially like two dozen gigantic seesaws.

Should someone stage a real version of the opera from FF6 Y/N?

I started to turn around on it when Wotan and Loge descended to the underworld over it in the first opera but yeah they do some really great staging with it for what is a pretty straightforward device. Being able to map that out in your head and see the potential in it is pretty fucking clever.

annoyingly, I can hear the prompter a bit, boo

SPOILER: THIS ENDS BADLY

Also totally different topic I just found out about the Draka book series today and WTF.

>Simpfried

Oh no. Siegfried in Brunnhilde's armor. Xe's trans now!

the S.M. Stirling? He's always been, uhhh, a bunch of pounds of crazy in an undefined sack, right?

Yeah, there's this trashy military sci-fi thread up on /tg/ and holy shit. Someone posted an Ao3 fanfic co-written by the author and it's something else.

Calling upon the gods is always painfully ironic in this opera, as we know they have abdicated (and Brynnie knows this too at one point)

the C the last Brynnie I saw let out at the end of this scene is the greatest loud note I have ever heard in my life

The hell are you two on about? This romantic dialogue is really weird and awkward, almost like these two barely know each other and just making up bullshit. ... Oh, right.

>Separated. We shall never part.
PFFFTHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Morris was a goddamn YOUNG 50.

The internet would lose their shit at Medieval Courtly romance.

I don't want to dig up citations right now (too distracting from the opera) but very much so.

it's a 19th century german work, Cranky, it's all metaphysical and shit

Here PCR depicts Siegfried going off and doing random hero shit on his way

You can really hear the waves in the music

Note the shady people at the top of the page, we're going to meet them soon

Attached: Gotterdammerung #01 of 4 (Book Four The Ring of Nibelung) (2001) (Was-DCP) (20).jpg (1024x1635, 345.75K)

(the mood darkens considerably in the music there at the end, into the 'woe' motif)

Attached: Gotterdammerung #01 of 4 (Book Four The Ring of Nibelung) (2001) (Was-DCP) (21).jpg (1024x1638, 302.32K)

Hagen is, btw, the magnificent bastard of the opera, with the best music

Two thirds of those women want a better look at his "Nothung".

Boy i know you didn't just call Brunhilde "mediocre."

Attached: Gotterdammerung #01 of 4 (Book Four The Ring of Nibelung) (2001) (Was-DCP) (22).jpg (1024x1627, 342.49K)

I like how they position Gunther and Hagen here so Gunther is nominally at the head of the table but to the audience it's centered on Hagen.

Oh, assumed they were just in charge of that army he singlehandedly destroys.

To continue last nights commentary, Hagen would e best boy, if he wasn't such a dick.

Is this comic saying incels are evil?

>it's a 19th century german work, Cranky, it's all metaphysical and shit
I know. It was a joke that I made because I'm not educated enough to get it, so I just latch on to the surface layer.

It's just showing you the different paths you can choose in life: incel, volcel, simp, unhappy marriage.
