Flame Princess actually makes me mad. It's not that I want them together, it's the way it got dropped so hard after Rebecca Sugar left.
Same thing with Princess Bubblegum and Marceline it's not that they're lesbian it's just the sudden shift in the story. The show kinda takes the audience at some point and says "This is how the show is now. Like it!"

FP was "meant to be" kind of first love, but those kinds of love are also unsustainable and immature, and they end catastrophically. To keep them together also wouldn't work from scenario point of view, simply because FP is too op. Unless she was permanently nerfed, having her in the party would make show boring.

PB could've been an option if the show was axed in S2. With the worldbuilding heaped on top afterwards, she's a 1000-year old protoplasm with a weird family of 1000-year old protoplasms. Finn is nice, a friend, but a markedly temporary element of her world.

Marceline has the same problem. For her Finn, while also a friend, could never be more than a pet, - and in her case the correct word would be "a thrall".

HW is the the most sane, stable and compatible option for a vagabond like him. Her whole arc was as close to "sexual tension" as PG show could afford to get.
