So, what’s going to happen now? Is this it for physical comics?

On the one hand, I was just about to start shopping our pitch around and was quite mentally prepared for the monthly ride.
On the other, I'm all for Diamond's death.
It looks like the Direct Market is dead.
This is what happens when you allow monopolies to exist. The entire industry let itself become dependant on a single distribution company, and paid dearly for it. This was inevitable.
What will likely happen now is that publishers will shift to an all digital platform, or try to set up their own direct shipping infrastructure. They might even experiment with a mail order system, but that's probably too much to hope for. LCS' are fucked though.
Chink flu just accelerated the inevitable
You fucking idiot this has to do with the VIRUS not the distribution system . If there were 10 instead of 1, 10 would be shut down
They'll ignore your point to post their shill posts again
Well yes, but I really want Diamond to die, so I take pleasure in any bad news on their part
that's fine, but don't pretend this is a business issue
With smaller regional distributors some parts maybe able to keep going.
Buut yeah the fact the individual comics shops are closing many for good because they won't have the resources to reopen when they legally can isn't helping either.
This is the end result of the comics companies embracing niche stores as their primary distribution venue.
Yes this is the end result of niche stores and conveniently ignores how nearly everything outside of comics is also closing down for weeks or months, you smoothbrain.
I guess it's LCS fault for not selling food and medicine to become designated as essential services, right? fucking troglodyte
literally who cares. no one here reads them.
If they weren't so niche they'd have financial reserves (assuming their owners would have enough frugality and foresight to plan for bad times) to reopen in a few months or new people would have incentive to open new stores when the opportunity comes.
But sure, delude yourselves into thinking everything can just return to normal in a few months like nothing happened.
>I still don't know what I'm talking about, GRR MAD AT DIRECT MARKET
We know.
There are 3 ways this could end:
a) Publishers (DC, Marvel, Image... etc) decide to work with printing companies directly and start distributing their comics to comic book shops without the involvement of Diamond
b) Diamond continues to do nothing and a competitor is born to help publishers distribute comics
c) Diamond continues doing nothing. Publishers release their comics digitally, further pushing digital comics the way of the future - leading to Diamond's eventual death.

>what’s going to happen now?
A lot of self righteous creators are going to find themselves unemployed
God, I can't wait
>um, marvel, you totes have to hire me, I have the same hairstyle as your character
>sorry, we can't afford new talent
>you're like racist?
>fuck off
>a) Publishers (DC, Marvel, Image... etc) decide to work with printing companies directly and start distributing their comics to comic book shops without the involvement of Diamond
>So there's a rumor going around that Marvel is planning to try to continue to distribute Physical floppies through a normal book distribution company Disney owns (Hatchet Books)
>Is this going to be the Heroes World debacle all over again?
Bump
when my lcs reopens, what items in their store have the best profit margin for them?
INB4 that faggot nerd start sperging and spamming this thread about Yas Forums being his property and nothing else should be discussed.
Die diamond
The thread was archived at 300 posts. I wonder why?
Too much shitposting.
There's been non Yas Forums related subject on here before. But when it starts getting nasty the mods sage it.
I don't care about the local comic shops, are we still getting books on comixology next week?
>comixology next week?
Might be later
>Comic pros that mocked others for doing indie books and youtube channels will come crawling to those places and fail spectacurlarly
>shops that stopped selling new comics and just focused on back issues and otehr collectibles will stay afloat in the new market
>already established creators like Brian Pulido, evs, meyers will continue to thrive with their audiences and books
>big 2 will go digital only and do subscription service like shonen jump
>cuts their staff to the bone and relies on back catalog to fill in comics piece while they focus on films and television
>Image and dark horse might survive via other distribution means
>idw and other publishers will close forever
wish there was a lower bar for that.
Would DC/Marvel rather screw LCSs or creators?
>>big 2 will go digital only and do subscription service like shonen jump
It's crazy how much better Shonen Jump's app is compared to DC Universe or Marvel Unlimited
All for $2 a month.
Are you assholes really so blinded by irrational hatred you'll look for any excuse to whine about Diamond instead of looking at the bigger picture?
It's not blind hatred, it's being realistic about the collapse we are seeing and how the big 2 can't easily fix it.
I wonder how much going digital would reduce comic prices.
Probably wouldn’t, because high prices tend to stay grandfathered in. Still, if you aren’t paying to print each issue with colored ink, that’s gonna save a lot of money.
Nah, it's just LCS have been closing down a lot lately and this pandemic is just making the situation much worse. I know comics will survive this but I'm not sure about Diamond, Marvel, or DC.
or FOR LITERALLY FREE ON THEIR WEBSITE.
Marvel and DC will always survive because they are farming IPs. Warner and Disney will keep them afloat.
FUCK COMIC BOOKS AND FUCK YOU FOR READING THEM YOU FUCKING PATHETIC MANCHILD! HIP HIP HOORAY FOR THE DEATH OF COMICS!
"Being Realistic" would mean not sensationalizing it like these threads have been doing.
>I wonder how much going digital would reduce comic prices.
GWW just said she got a
>stop writing
email
Probably cover-priced older trades
Modern comics are mostly complete trash that focus on identity politics and fat left propaganda. You can't get away from it. Now I'm not a 70 year old man, but you cannot tell me comics back then were anywhere close to this funny book venom.
>fat left propaganda
Nah, they'll be fine. Someone will take Diamond's place.
not related to marve/dc, that was some indi publisher
Based EVS and co. will get the last laugh.
You want to talk about realistic? Fucking airports are close to shutting down, dude. You think comic books are going to survive the crisis?
I'm talking about the people who think Diamond "shutting down" is some kind of victory while pretending nothing else around the world is shutting down.
Diamond sucks though. They always have. Losing them is a good thing.
You forgot to remove your name and tripcode this time
>To Our DC Talent Community,
> Everyone here at DC is thinking of you and the challenges that you’re all facing in this current crisis. I want to stress that DC is fully open for business. Our editorial teams and support staff are working remotely for the foreseeable future but that will not interfere with our day-to-day operations.
>Our main concern, of course, is your well-being and that of your families. No matter where you are in the world, take care and don’t hesitate to reach out. We realize that there may be unexpected challenges ahead and I want you to know that we are here to help.
>No one knows, of course, how long this current situation may last. For now, this is our new normal. And as we transition to a company working from home, we gain the flexibility to overcome any challenge. Most importantly, we remain incredibly excited about the stories we will create together.
>Best,

...This time?
So they won't stop writing and drawing, that's fine, but how are they going to sell the product?
do comics artists typically work at some centralized studio anyway?
i just assumed in this digital age that they would set up home studios
CG wins again baby!
According to once source, DC and Marvel are still sending out direct subscriptions for April, at least, as those books are already printed.
Other news DC is trying to find a replacement printer( though they'd still need a way to get things to stores)
Meanwhile Lucasfilm is promoting Dr Aphra saying it's still coming out digitally, while a person from marvel supposedly told Newsarama when they asked it's delayed without the print copy. So the only thing clear is somebody has no idea what's going on.
Are they literally going to wait until tuesday to let people know what the plan is? Or are We going to have to wait and see if Comixology updates at 3AM on Wednesday morning or not?
So that means they'll still send comic to shops, or mailed right to peoples' homes?
People with subscriptions, they'll be mailed straight to their homes or p.o box. LCS' have to get them from Diamond.
Mailed direct to peoples homes. It's not as common as in the old days(they no longer promote it via cards in the back of books) but apparently you can contact DC/Marvel directly sign up for it.
>physical comics
Floppies only existed to be collected into TPBs that could be sold through a different distribution network. I think you'll see more comics going straight to paperback form and monthlies finally start to die off. Or maybe they'll get repackaged into magazine format anthologies. Digital delivery is the only long term solution, though.
