Has there ever been an instance of a sidekick/secondary character becoming more popular than the main character? The only one I can think of is Daria from Beavis and Butthead but that's debatable.
Has there ever been an instance of a sidekick/secondary character becoming more popular than the main character...
This reminds artemis and green arrow had like 0 bonding
Wally was more popular than Barry during the 90s and the 00s.
Today he definitely isn't, though, and Wallifags can't accept that they are what they accused Barryfags of being.
When a sidekick gets popular, what do they do? Do they take over the mantle like Wally? Or do they go off into their own identity like Dick?
Either way I can't think of one where the sidekick started that way and truly eclipsed their mentor.
Unless you count homages then Static is probably more popular than Black Lightning
Wally was the main Flash for 20 year after his mentor died. He has fallen from the spotlight after the New 52 reboot made Barry the main Flash again.
Then we have Blue Bettle, who became more popular that the original one.
Kato, mainly because Bruce Lee played him in the 60's TV show
Wally West during the 90's and 00's
Dick did both and did better as Nightwing although I guess it's not fair to expect him to be more popular than fucking Batman.
>Unless you count homages then Static is probably more popular than Black Lightning
That feels like a different thing, it's like Fawcett's Captain Marvel being more popular than Superman back in the 40's or people being way more familiar with the Ninja Turtles than the Daredevil/Frank Miller stuff they were doing homage/parody to.
Rex the Wonder Dog was Green Lantern's dog but then he became more popular than the Green Lantern so they gave the whole comic to him.
I can only think of legacy characters more famous than their predecessors, such as Mister Terrific, The Atoms, both Blue Beetles, The Flash and Green Lantern. But that's not exactly what you're asking for I think.
Popeye started out as a side character in Thimble Theater, played second fiddle to Castor Oyl, and HamGravy.
Moving away from cape comics, Popeye is a definite example.
>losing out in popularity to a fucking dog
what ever happened to rex
Black Canary. Started off in Johnny Thunder's strip. Then after a few appearances had her feature replace his. And is certainly more well known.
Who was popeye a sidekick to?
Nice, I didn't know about this.
>Popeye started out as a side character in Thimble Theater, played second fiddle to Castor Oyl, and HamGravy.
Not sidekick, secondary character. The comic strip Thimble Theatre started out with its main characters being Olive Oyl, her brother Castor, and her boyfriend Harold. Almost a decade into its run Popeye showed up and swiftly became the main character instead.
She also took his place in the Justice Society. I wondere if he had any hard feelings about her just taking over everything like that.
Snoopy is definitely the face of the Peanuts franchise rather than Charlie Brown.
Fuck, I forgot about that.
Wouldn't Kato from Green Hornet count? Granted the popularity may be more toward Bruce Lee than the character.
It happened on TV more than comics. Mr Spock, Fonzie, Ilya Kuryakin.
That's a good point, Snoopy didn't get introduced until later in the strip, and at first he also wasn't Charlie Brown's dog.
Alan Scott accidentally dropped him on a remote island.
Spock overtook Kirk for a while because of horny middle aged fanfic roasties, but nowadays they're equal
>Olive Oyl
>Her boyfriend Harold
Popeye is such a GigaChad he not only stole the guys girlfriend, he stole the entire strip from Olive and she fell on his dick for it.
Originally, Porky was the star while Daffy played the supporting or bit role. How things changed.
Barryfags were sending death threats to Waid and Bill Messner Loebs, man. Fans were always fucking crazy.
>Diddy Kong to this day is more popular than Donkey Kong
ahahahaha no
>Diddy Kong to this day is more popular than Donkey Kong
That's like saying Luigi is more popular than Mario, a lot of people clearly prefer Luigi over Mario, but Mario still way more popular.
t. never expanded dong
Carol Danvers and Mar-vell?
Zatanna's dad has been dead for a long, long time so she probably counts
That may be the case depending on how Carol as Captain Marvel lasts.
even as Miss Marvel she was more popular than Mar-vell I think
No, Spock was much more popular than Kirk for decades because he was a more interesting character played by a better actor. Fans in 1966 were mostly young nerds.
Porky had a lot of excellent black and white cartoons with him as the star. See "Dough for the Do-do"
>I'm not the nicest bloke you've ever met. But I do me best.
Betty Boop is a cultural icon while no one even remember Bimbo the Dog existed
*Porky Pig in Wackyland
Dough for the Do-Do is the color remake.
Definitely, his black and white cartoons are really underrated. The Wackyland short is a classic, and I've always had a soft spot for Porky's Poppa.
Artemis was her own thing though, with her weirdo mum as her manager.
Funny, that's what he eventually did to one of his future wives
you mean they colorized and renamed it or are there actual differences?
and not go back for him?
what an awful owner
Hawkwoman? I don't really know enough about her or Hawkman. But I remember she was in the JL cartoon and I imagine that meant she ended up being more popular than Hawkman for a bit.
I really wish they'd have Obsidian bust his balls about this in canon desu
>shut up dad your dog got more tv specials than you did
In China the show was renamed "The Kato Show" and edited slightly to make the Green Hornet more of a clumsy idiot and give Kato more screen time. Bruce Lee was already incredibly famous over there when the show premiered and Chinese audiences of course wanted to see him more than they wanted to see the Green Hornet.
Explain
Constantine was originally a side character in Swamp Thing and Sandman before being given his own comic.
Psylocke migrated to the X-Men and left her brother in the dust.
Hellblazer actually started a few months before Sandman but the point still stands that he showed up in Swamp Thing first, and also showed up in a bunch of other mainline DC comics too. Here he is meeting the Green Arrow when the Green Arrow went to England one time.
Vices become habits.
Wolverine, the most famous mutant of all time was a one off character in the Incredible Hulk and I'm faily sure Sabertooth popped up as a villain of the week in Iron Fist. Both have more populairty than the books they started in. Then again there not really secondary characters but one of foes.
Popeye the Sailor Man
Fucks everything that he can
His dick got no germs, other men look like worms
next to Popeye The Sailor Man!
Opus from Bloom County.
Damn, that's good point, I forgot the comic started out with Milo Bloom and his grandparents. Milo didn't even come back after Bloom County ended in 1989, until Breathed started up Bloom County again online just a few years ago.
Harley is definitely very popular, but not more than Joker or Batman.
Not the same thing but Invincible wasn't the first main character for his universe. That belongs to the forgotten Tech Jacket.
