All they had to do, was come up with a reason for them to be estranged that wasn't 100% Suyin's fault and made Lin look unreasonable for cutting ties with her.
But they somehow couldn't even manage that much. Lin had all the right in the world to shun Suyin but everyone around her acted like it was unreasonable to cut ties with toxic people, because they're family.
I know they were going for a "You'll never be happy, as long as you focus on the grudges of the past." deal, but Suyin is a character they expressly invented for the third season. It seems completely artificial.
