Anyone else getting sick of cartoon creators voicing the main characters of their shows? It comes across as incredibly lazy, showing that you are better than the others for voicing the main lead or that you had to self-insert you into your own cartoons.
2010s cartoons were infamous for this, almost every cartoon had the creator voicing the main lead.
That's literally what JG Quintel did, his voice for Mordecai is his natural voice.
Blake Thompson
>lazy who knows and and feels a character better than its own creator?
Jordan Gonzalez
cost cutting we learned from simpsons
Mason Jones
It works well when they're talented. The little boy in the new TECHNOLOGY BAD Disney movie could be much better with a better voice actor. They mostly do a great job like in Mao Mao.
>2010s cartoons were infamous for this, almost every cartoon had the creator voicing the main lead. I can only think of Flapjack and Regular Show. Name some others.
>Problem Solverz >Secret Mountain Fort Awesome >Clarence >Uncle Grandpa >Rick & Morty >Welcome to the Wayne >Billy Dilley >The Jellies >Mao Mao Just at the top of my head, not to mention shows where the creator voices a major supporting character like in Gravity Falls and OK KO.
Isaac Gray
lol no fuck off, it's literally just voice acting bait thread
Landon Peterson
This is why everyone hates zoomers, 90s cartoons barely had self-inserts like this blatant shit the 2010s did. The only big cartoon that did this was Ren & Stimpy.
Chase Allen
I highly encourage it. If someone was able to successfully sell a show to a network (possibly with some minor experience doing voices for temp tracks on other shows in the past), then they should be more than capable of voicing at least ONE main or supporting character in their own show. Said character doesn’t necessarily have to be a self-insert, but it’d make sense for it to be since most cartoons come from the creator’s childhood experiences (e.g. Gravity Falls, OK K.O.!, etc.). Voicing a recurring character in your own show not only makes production go a little smoother since one of the VAs will always be in the studio, but it also gives you a second paycheck and even future opportunities doing voices on other productions.
What said, as well as:
>Big City Greens >Apple & Onion >Craig of the Creek* >Harvey Beaks* >Tarantula >Final Space >Summer Camp Island* >Ballmastrz: 9009* >Mighty Magiswords >Victor and Valentino >Infinity Train* >Duncanville >Tig n’ Seek * = not the main lead, but an important side character
>He says this posting a show where the creators voices multiple characters.
Daniel Bennett
>developing a cartoon idea with two friends >one friend self-inserts HARD into one of the show’s main characters >to the point where he’s using the character’s name as group chat nicknames and the name of all his vidya characters >character’s gf is clearly his fantasy girl based on how much thought he’s put into her >he wants to voice the guy because of course he does >has the gall to accuse me and the other guy for getting too close to certain characters I’m trying to be subtle about telling him to fuck off, but it’s starting to drive me crazy.
It's pretty based actually. It's no coincidence they're usually some of the best voice work on the cast. Hirsch killed it.
Benjamin Bailey
yeah, because I don't care...that was the point of the gif
I know sometimes I can come off as petty and have manchildren demands for stupid movies and media, but I woner if I ever said something so weirdly specific as this. is like complaining off too many characters having black pupils or something is so random
Nicholas Richardson
Don't forget Mike Judge voices Beavis, Butthead, and Hank Hill.
Alexander Cook
Yeah, but I thought we were mainly talking about 2010s cartoons.
No. It's only ever a problem if the VA is bad or poorly fits the character in question. I can't imagine anyone other than JG Quintel voicing Mordecai, for example.
Luis Rivera
What are some examples of show creators who were BAD at voice acting?
Logan Flores
>All those Cartoon Network example What happened? Are they so creatively bankrupt or do they want to save money?
Mason Campbell
I never really thought about it, I suppose it really depends on if they are good at it. Like if they can voice act what does it matter?
Lucas Walker
One of the many reasons why I don't bother with this show.
Just straight up confront him about it. If you don't do it now, it'll just get worse, and if he refuses to see his own hypocrisy on the "getting too close" thing and back off a bit, cut him loose.
Gavin Brown
>Create a show >Want to voice it's main character because why the hell not. >Noooooo, you need to hire a professional voice actor! >But I... >NOOOOO!
It’s not a bad thing if it’s done well, which is usually the case.
Victor and Valentino might be the only example with shitty voice acting. Olan Rogers’s voice may be annoying at times in Final Space, but he’s still got good comedic timing and does pretty well at expressing diverse emotions.
OP is just bitter that they don’t have their own show
Blake Sullivan
Kill him.
Carter Bell
Do they get paid more if they voice characters? Kyle Carozza voiced like half the cast of Magiswords. And I wondered if it was some moneymaking scheme on their part.
Levi Baker
90s had a bunch of shows made by comedians who voiced the main character, sometimes a younger version of themselves. Like Bobby's World, Life with Louie, and that Roseanne one.
Also South Park, Downtown, Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill, Dr Katz, Home Movies, looks like creator driven shows are where it comes from.
Oliver Long
>major supporting character like in Gravity Falls Stan was Alex and he was an MC
Jayden Myers
>>has the gall to accuse me and the other guy for getting too close to certain characters Next time he does this call him out immediately. preferably with your other friend there so he can back you up. I hate that shit. What's the cartoon about user?
Parker Campbell
Gravity Falls was really fucked up example. I mean, he voiced half of the main characters and was trying to micromanage the show in other ways.
Julian Lewis
What are you talking about? Stan was a part of GF’s main trio, but he was just a major supporting character. This isn’t even a question, like whether Dipper or Mabel was the main character.
>muh selfinserting Mordecai fucked up a lot and he didn't get by with it. He was regularly called out for his shit and lost a girl for good. Stop being a faggot.
Colton Walker
>. Micromanaging in which ways ? I don't even like GF, but still curious.
Blake Howard
>Stan was a part of GF’s main trio, but he was just a major supporting character. Not him, but Stan was absolutely a main character alongside the twins. Soos is a major supporting character.
Juan Williams
>not liking Gravity Falls LOL, could you even imagine?
Whatever you choose to call it, there’s still a distinction between Alex Hirsch voicing Stan or Ian JQ voicing Rad, and Justin Roiland voicing Rick or Parker Simmons voicing Mao Mao. Stan was not THE main character. At the base, the show was primarily about the twins.
Don't like it. The comedy comes across as a poor man classic Simpsons. Something about the timing of the jokes, the orchestral cues and sound effects just feel....off.
Benjamin Richardson
Stan is as much a main character as Benson in Regular Show. It's just retarded to do categories like "supporting main" because then it gets open to debate what is and isn't a supporting main.
Hudson Bell
Shame that the twins were not interesting or compelling protagonists in the slightest.
Tyler Barnes
Damn, I guess you’ll hate all three of these shows, too
I feel like the comedy and overall feel of the show doesn't work as well as they wanted to because the characters just aren't that likeable or compelling. Spongebob and Adventure Time also had silly humor, but it worked there because of how endearing the characters were. GF was trying to go for something similar, but it missed the mark imo.
Xavier Cook
>. Well, yeah. They're literally the same thing. Same humor, animation style, timing, etc. Heck, i wouldn 't be surprised if they have the same music composer from GF
Caleb Bennett
>113793811 Why should you even bother ? It's as milquetoast as an animated show can get.
Easton Baker
Fuck off, yes they are
Jack Powell
Again, Benson isn’t the main character of Regular Show. Mordecai and/or Rigby is. Just like Stan isn’t the main character of Gravity Falls. Did you read the OP?
