I love this Steven, but I'd be fine with a mix of new and old Steven. One that's sensitive and tries to bring out the best in others, but isn't afraid to go fight and use his powers creatively.

I personally can't stand the post-season 1 townie episodes unless they're about Greg or Connie but that's not the point I'm trying to make. Wanting hyper choreographed Dragon Ball Z fights 24/7 and for the main character to be this unstoppable edgelord is stupid, you can have good narratives in this show without resorting to that pandering bullshit. (See: Peridot's redemption, the Sardonyx arc, Amethyst growing up and maturing during the latter half of Season 3, Mindful Education, the Bismuth episode, any Pearl-centric episode revolving around her relationship with Rose/Pink)

Don't forget about all the Greg flashback episodes and The Trial. The most action packed episodes tend to be the most underwhelming honestly aside from Lapis' debut episodes, Jail Break, and this most recent episode.

You are claiming that Steven universe managed to present an alternative to the shonnen formula, it clearly didn't. You can make something different from a shonnen anime, some of the best anime is the copposite from shonnens.
Steven universe did plot dumps between fillers the same way adventure Time did, except adventure Time was good

The Trial is probably the most perfect exposition episode I've seen in a kid's show in recent memory. The courtroom framework just allows for all those critical questions to come out seamlessly.

I don't really think it was meant to be an alternative to shonen at all, it's just a cartoon preaching love and acceptance made by a bunch of weebs who took inspiration from anime and cartoons they grew up on.

The show could've really been something special if they didn't spam townie episodes so much so late into the show and focused all their efforts on the big story that Jail Break set in motion, then it would've been a much better show that's more consistent in its quality. I have no idea why seasons 3, 4, and 5 had so much fluff and insignificant bullshit that deep into the show.

I’m actually really pissed that we’re only getting this kind of interesting arc for Steven now in the last few episodes. It’s like they realized too late that their formula of constant lore teasing and delaying a long arc in favor of townie antics actually hurt their ability to give development to their protagonist.

Because the showruners experience was working on adventure time

Rebecca said we couldn’t ever get this arc because Steven was always the person who would put what other people wanted over what he wanted
